HER NAME IS RIO

The Olympic Games are about to start. The opening ceremony takes place this coming Friday in the iconic city of Rio de Janeiro.

The usual moans are in full force how the city won’t be ready. These moans seem to follow any city from a relatively poor country holding a major sporting event. I don’t think any city can be fully ready.

Also dominating the Olympic news is the mass banning of Russian athletes because of the state-sponsored doping programme in Russia. I’m sure Vladimir Putin will get even when the next World Cup is hosted in Russia or perhaps even beforehand by stealing another slice of Ukraine!

Perhaps the biggest scare story doing the rounds is the spread of the zika virus, which has now reached Florida. Though the risk is real, the risk can easily be managed not least because mosquitoes don’t thrive in a Brazilian winter. The virus can also be sexually transmitted, but Olympic athletes are given a free supply of condoms in their pursuit of sporting excellence.

The zika virus particularly affects pregnant women, so I don’t know why so many male golfers, including the four top-ranked golfers, refuse to go to Rio for the Olympics.

Golf has just been granted Olympic status after a very long absence from the Olympic Games. Perhaps golf will be thrown out and jousting will take its place. There are serious talks between the International Olympic Committee and the Fédération Equestre Internationale to bring this medieval sport into the Olympic arena.

Will you watch the Olympic Games in Rio?
If so, what sports will you watch?

I’ll watch all the sitting-down sports like cycling, riding, rowing and yachting. For some reason, the British do well at these sports! I’ll also enjoy the 100m sprint to see whether Usain Bolt can still do his magic. I’ll enjoy watching water polo too, especially as cameras pick up all the underwater shenanigans. And there's always beach volleyball to distract me!

Four years ago London hosted the Olympics. I was very proud of these Olympics. I know they’ve now become the most doped Olympic Games ever, which perhaps isn't the legacy that Sebastian Coe had in mind! But the London Olympics showed Britain being outward-looking and embracing multiculturalism.

Four years later after the Brexit vote, Britain is becoming more inward-looking and accepting only monoculturalism. How times change, though the Queen can still do a mean parachute jump!

Will you watch the Olympic Games in Rio? Maybe if they happen to be on when I'm around the TV.

If so, what sports will you watch? Have they added pole mounting to the line up yet?

Will you watch the Olympic Games in Rio?
I may watch some of the games. I'm not a dedicated sports fan. I might be able to get with the program if they revive Lions vs. Christians again. I think you'd have to live in America to truly appreciate that sport. I'm doing wrist exercises to prepare myself for the "thumbs down" gesture, just in case.

If so, what sports will you watch?
If women are doing it, i'll probably watch them do it. I do like watching male gymnasts though. And boxing. Maybe Lions boxing Christians? And then shipping them off somewhere else.

I'll watch as much of the games as I can manage. I like the swimming and diving best oh and gymnastics.

I'm not sure if the golfers pulling out is all because of the Zika Virus....I think there is more to it than that.

Will you watch the Olympic Games in Rio? I agree with kinky. What is the point? The doping is not exclusive to the Russians. From an economic stand point it devastates the host. Brazil is providing sub par and filthy housing. A river of sewage flowing in and about the city is a great breeding ground for the zika virus. I applaud the golfers and others that have declined to participate. The zika has and is transmittable sexually ( numerous examples are coming to light) , so why chance it with ones family.

If so, what sports will you watch? N/A

I don't blame the golfers or anyone for skipping. After these games I can see Zika outbreaks happening all over the world. .. They don't seem to be prepared and there is a lot political unrest in Brazil right now.

I will be watching. The opening ceremonies are usually fantastic. And it will be close to my time zone, so I'm sure there will be plenty to watch. .. I will pay attention to swimming. (Go Michael Phelps! ) .. And I do enjoy the gymnasts as well.

Bonjour Spunky
Je regarde les jeux olympiques mais sans passion
Les premiers étant toujours les premiers avantagés par la nature, il faudrait qu'ils aient un Andy Capp , par exemple partir avec 3 grammes d'alcool dans le sang ou avoir fumé un joint

The first is always the first advantaged by nature, they should have an Andy Capp, for example start with 3 grams of alcohol in blood or smoking a joint

1. Yes.
2. All of them. For some reason I even find the weight lifting fascinating. Though I don't enjoy the 'sports' which are subjective, like gymnastics and diving.

I'll be watching the athletics (mainly track). I don't know who's in the British team though as I'm not that big a fan

The reason Zika is a problem for men is that it gets transferred via sperm. So an infected golfer could inadvertently infect his pregnant partner. Indeed, as the virus remains in the body for some time, he could infect a future partner, who then becomes pregnant.

The other risk with Zika is that there are many regions that have Zika-capable mosquitoes but no Zika (most of SE Asia). A tourist from S Korea gets bitten in Brazil, gets infected with Zika (possibly without even knowing it) and goes back to Seoul. There they get bitten by another mosquito, which is now a Zika carrier... it's a real problem.

As is the sight of people fishing out turds from the untreated sewage pumped out into the sailing area ~^~

But I will be watching!

Will you watch the Olympic Games in Rio? If I have time and TV happens to be on, I'd watch opening and closing ceremonies.

If so, what sports will you watch? I'm not a sports fan but if anything, I'd watch gymnastics.

There's pole vaulting and mountain biking bot not pole mounting yet in the Olympics. I hope your sport will be added to the Olympics very soon!

I'm watching the gymnastics now; the American gymanst Simone Biles is a star. The female gymnasts all look underage to me!

I think the top golfers by staying away from Rio haven't done their sport that well!

I think the top golfers have calculated that there's nothing to financially gain from participating in the Olympics. It's a shame that they're not putting back something in the sport has served them well in terms of money!

I can understand your scepticism and even cynicism towards the Olympics. Even cities from rich countries can't afford holding the Olympics. It's time to scale back.

Though Brazil may struggle to hold the Olympics, it's good they are holding the Olympics rather than relatively rich cities. After all it is just sport which shouldn't need all the money that's now spent on the Olympics in terms of new stadiums and bribes.

Michael Phelps is a legend! Him alone would make the top ten or so of the Olympic medals table! But is he better than Mark Spitz?
