Feedback on proposed Message Center changes

We are getting closer on updating the message center to return some of the features of the previous one. One of the things it appears we could have done better was explain the shift from an "Email" model to a "Message Conversation" model. That is, before each listing was similar to your personal email account where you might have 6 different emails from 1 person. Now, you just see a single "row" in the message center for each conversation. This has the advantage of less clutter in your message center BUT makes "folders of email" no longer a useful metaphor. Instead, we can have "folders of people's conversations". To that end, we are working on the following.

Conversations will be grouped and viewed in two major categories - "Active" which are conversations that are either new messages to you or where the other person has replied to you and "Pending" which are those where you sent to others and are awaiting their first reply. Under "Active" conversations, you can decide to view ones from "Important" members (Cupid Matches, Friends, Hotlisted, VIPs) or "Filtered" members (those who don't match your Cupid settings).

We are still thinking a better term than "Important"

Thoughts?

I can only see the image you show if I read on your home blog this time, it not appearing when I click to the blog post to read. I like the plan with what you are going to do under the filter button. I don't store my email in folders using the old message center.

Each person have their like or dislike, I had like this new style actually even from the beginning only there were bug issues that need to get fix still. I just need to click on the username of the member and all the history of what begin written all in one from that member, just need to scroll up or down to look for older message when needed. There is the Search messages box to type the member username I had contact with to pull out the page of message from them.

A lot of the button on the new message center I actually don't use. The Filter Drop down I did use it a bit in the beginning and also the X to delete plus the trash. Mostly, I only click to get my message center open, I would see the newest email on top left of the list. I simple click to read, and if I need to reply, I just type on the box window below the open message. Then Click send.

The only issue, I got is that so far 2 member message conversations I don't see a scroll bar to the right and not able to read the new message if they send me. I did find a way to be able to read the can't scroll to read new message. I click on the refresh button on the message center left top next to the Filter. The message from that member close. I then reclick on that same member to open his or her email. The new message would open to the newest message from that member to the bottom. Since can't scroll, I would not be able to check on the older message from that same member. Well, still this issue need to get fix.

Also,Is it possible to make a delete button to be able to delete some old message if i want from the history of conversation from the same member. At this moment if we delete, the whole history of conversation message would be deleted from the same member.

Thank you for reading.

I like the visual look of the mail center but I'm not fond of the way it works now.
1. One of the first problems (which was a one shot) was that all of the messages, new, saved and deleted, were all in one listing. That was very confusing for me at first but once I realized what was happening, I had to go back and manually re-delete all of my previously deleted messages. This was frustrating and time consuming because you could only delete the messages visible on the screen. If you tried to page forward, any previously checks off messages would not be deleted (I hope that makes sense).

2.I keep a very neat message enter; I look at a message and usually act on it the first time I touch it. Before, I had a few key messages I wanted to keep hidden in a folder marked: Read mail. Now I see all of my messages visible in the left hand pane and I find it makes the UI cluttered and, for a lot of people, confusing.

3. Another feature of the old message center I liked was that mail from people who didn't match my cupid matches were tracked into a "Filtered" folder. I didn't get any kind of notification and I could look at them at my leisure.

Now all of my messages are lumped together into the same list and I get notified of every message I get. I don't like that and would love to have messages separated into "matches cupid settings" and my friends and others so I 'm not checking my message center when I don't need to.

4.Another navigation point, the link to the user's profile is too close to the preview of the message. I know that I, and have head that other people, clicked on the screen name when they were trying to click on the message. It would be great if that box was a few pixels higher and the screen name and message preview were further apart.

5. OK, here's a *big* problem that I'm hoping will be addressed. Personally, I much prefer the Email mode for messages on this site. IF there is an ongoing conversation, subsequent messages would have the text from all of the prior messages. In the current incarnation of the message center, every message I've ever exchanged with a given member is retained in the message thread.

For example, and I can't get a full screen shot of this, When I look at the most recent message I sent a friend about 4 days ago, I also see the messages I sent him 4, 6, 9 and 11 months ago even though the groups of messages have nothing to do with each other. (See below)

I hope you find this helpful.

In my opinion, dividing up the folders to that much detail is frivolous. I think all that's needed are Cupid Matches and Friends. BUT, in order for the folder to be effective, the cupid settings need to be respected, which a lot of the times they aren't, especially in regards to age and distance. A VIP folder is just there to make the person who dished out extra cash for the status feel good but has no practical use for the recipient.

Will the existing messages be retroactively sorted into the new folders?

Will we be able to create our own folders? Can there be a checkbox next to the messages so we can move the selected messages to the chosen folder at one go?

I've been noticing that the loading of the message center in my Android tablet has been sluggish these past few days, sometimes taking more than 3 minutes to load the message center itself and just as long to load one message. I use the desktop version.

What about a customized quick reply? Will that feature eventually be added?

yes, conversations will be retroactively sorted. You can tag conversations with labels currently... those tags show up below these "folders". Will ask about pre-saved reply messages... I think it's longer down the feature list.

I like the way everything is grouped into conversations now. It makes it easier to see the communication, and it eliminated all the quoting of previous messages which turned into endless clutter. It also makes it easy to identify the serial spammers -- the people who send generic, impersonal messages over and over to everybody within a 100 mile radius who looks like a potential match.

One problem I have is that the messages don't scroll up and down on my tablet. As a result, long conversations back and forth become difficult to read. I can usually get around it by switching to a different conversation, then switching back, and that seems to scroll automatically to the end. Perhaps there could be a preference to show the most recent part of the conversation *first* instead of making me scroll all the way to the bottom to find it?

I also prefer the email version of the message center for the following reasons:

* I don't like to have a cluttered inbox. I only like to have visible those notes that need a response from me or notes that I choose to leave there because the person is a friend.

* I also miss the date and time stamp for messages. The "1 day ago" feature, or worse when it switches to "months" is so vague...why bother with it at all. It's not always something that matters, but when a friend sends a note in the middle of the night, sometimes it helps to see the date/time stamp especially when it can alert you to the fact that something more may be going on mood-wise with them.

* Also...the new message center said that I'd be able to keep my messages forever. Well that isn't always working as one of my long-term contacts recently had all of his messages truncated to a week ago. That did not make me happy at all...

As much as I like having all thoughts from one person in a single thread, it's not practical for me here.

With the new message center I am unable to respond to any of my messages, is this because I am a standard member? I feel bad that I can not respond to people so that they don't think I am just ignoring them. Will this be fixed?

There is something being thinking about the new message center, is there a possible way to show the date stamp beside the message instead of day, hours or months. I think it would be great to remember when the date the conversation message taken place.

Not sure if you know but curious, from my understanding we can keep the conversation message from each members as long as we don't click delete. What if I don't delete most of the message conversation no matter who send. Will I eventually get a message that I reach the limit of space and need to delete message from members that I barely or make conversation with?

I don't really mind about the layout...what I do miss is the ability to turn off the email form on my profile....I don't know if it just me or not but I would like to have it again. Have you any idea how many stupid messages I get from men young enough to be my grandsons? I am not about to start giving lessons here! I have recently changed my profile completely and taken down my photos because of this.

Hi Andrew,

I only recently found your blog - for which I applaud you - and your suggestions in this post sound like much-needed improvements.

I'm personally not very happy with the new message center and have previously (mid-november) contacted the helpdesk with a very detailed feedback mail about it [copied in below]. A rare few of my issues seem to have been addressed since then (notably the speed issue), however most of my issues still remain valid up to this day.

On top of that there is one more which I would like to add which has become more notable since everyone has been forced over: messages now are more like chat than like mail which makes the distinction very small. The main effect is that messages now seem to contain less and less content and to be fair, that is not a plus. Someone who sends me a mail with the only content being 'hi', will end up in the 'totally not interesting'-pile (if someone doesn't even put any effort in their mail, IMHO they don't take me seriously, so I won't take them seriously). I find to my disappointment that the new message center for some reason entices people a lot more to send such short nonsical messages compared to the old one.

Hope this (including tail feedback below) helps.

Smile,
Lessa

L.S.,

Just thought I'd drop you all a note in response to the new email page layout which is being rolled out.

Even though it looks pretty, I'm really very unhappy with this new layout/functionality.

I'm a woman and receive numerous mails from numerous men a day. My 'normal' mailprocess was:
Read & check profile -> if I'm not interested -> quick reply (not interested) and file & forget in one of my user-defined folders.
If I'm interested, leave them in the inbox until I've taken the time to compose a personal reply to their mail, then file.

With the new mailpage listing all mails chronologically, I cannot filter easily on the mails I'm (still) interested in as there is no 'inbox/filtered mail-box' filter.
Scrolling through pages and pages of mails from contacts I'm not interested in to find the few I am interested in is very time-consuming, inefficient and irritating.

So far, these are my findings:
* Where are the 'quick replies' ?????? I used them in 95% of cases. Please give them back to us.
* The mailfilters I had in place (i.e. who I might be interested in and who not) which pre-filtered mails to the 'filtered-mail inbox' do not work anymore (and they can't be found in the preferences section anymore either). Would be useful to get this back.
* Loading a mail conversation is f*ing slow and I'm talking really f*ing slow - on a lightning fast computer I'm often waiting several minutes for a mailconversation to load.
* Adding a label to a mail is even slower and existing 'labels' (the old folders) have *not* been converted which is a pain in the neck as my whole personal sorting has disappeared.
* The label 'interested' suddenly appeared in my label list and can not seem to be removed. Believe me, I've tried several times, it keeps coming back...
* As mails are now in a framed view of which *you* have decided the size, I often can't view a complete mail - let alone a mail conversation - in one go, but have to keep scrolling up/down to read it completely/read back. This is really irritating. You don't know my screen size, so please, don't decide what view-size you think would be appropriate, you *will* get it wrong (and have).
* Mail dates have been changed to 'x... ago', i.e. '2 weeks ago', '3 months ago'. I personally much prefer a date. It can be quite telling if someone responds within a day or 5 days later and these new time classifications give way too little insight. Give me back proper normalized dates.
* I cannot filter the current mail list on 'mails I haven't replied to (yet)' or 'unlabeled mails'
* I cannot mark a read email as unread (the 'unread' filter would be a semi-useful filter *if* and only if I could mark mails as unread), oh, and all mails which I previously read are now marked 'unread'. So even if I would try to make use of this folder, it would be useless as it gives me a list of mails I've already replied to...
* I file mails in folders (now called labels) for a reason and as soon as I've replied, I really do not want to see those filed contacts in my mail list again, unless there's something new... and no, I do not want to delete the conversations from the view as I will then miss the history if someone bugs me again.
* If I want to filter the mail-list, I generally will want to filter by my own folders/labels. As the labels are loading asynchronously, getting my personal label list taken ages again, which makes the whole exercise of adding labels useless as in practice they are unusable. Also, why add the 'view more' for my personal labels after only three? *My* chosen labels are the ones *I* find important, so please show them all in one go or at least the first ten (can't imagine having more than that).

Please, please, please ... give me back the old mail center (or at the very least the choice to use the old mail center), so mail will become usable and efficient again.
And if that isn't possible, at the very least, give us a 'unlabeled mails' filter and a 'mails I haven't replied to' filter.

I'd be curious as to why it was determined that grouping messages into a "conversation" is seen to be advantage, instead of letting the member group them in folders in a manner which THEY CHOOSE.

But, if we are STUCK with this new format, I would prefer the use of the word "preferred" or "chosen" instead of important.

I like that you are asking for feedback, prior to making changes - instead of the other way around.

Whether it be to apply labels or move to folders, I would still like to have a checkbox next to the messages so they can be applied/moved at one go. The last message center had checkboxes. If there are 100s of emails in the message center, it's a major pain in the ass to individually apply any customized label.

And yes, the story we got as an advantage of the renewed message center is that we'll never lose any of our emails. They were even kind enough to resurrect all the emails we deleted in the past.

I'm a standard member and cannot reply to emails sent to me. With popularity privileges I was able to even send emails when I felt like it and now I can't even respond? There must be a quirk going on with the changes because I can't imagine paying members being happy that the people they contact cannot respond.

If I was a paying customer and paid extra to give standard members the ability to contact me, I'd be furious.

I'm not the only person with this problem. There are others who post on my blog and/or who I follow their blogs who are having the same problems.

Please, please switch one ascept of this new Message Center back to how it automatically worked in the old one.
When a spammer's profile has been removed for abuse and/or credit card fraud (in paying for the Gold that allowed them to send these messages in the first place), please remove the text of their message from the system
You, Andrew, are welcome to look at my MC and the ten most recent messages are of this type (all from the same spambot operator. (I've not deleted them myself so that you & Aryana can check them.)
Although all the senders have had their profiles removed, I can still see and read the details of the website they're Soliciting me towards and their ID there.
Under the old MC, the fact that I's received a message from FRAUDSTER was listed, but the subject was changed to "Member removed for abuse" and the text unavailable.
By continuing to permit their messages to be visible you are aiding and abetting the charge card fraud they've comitted.
Thanks for all the work you're doing here to bring life back to this site.

I'd really like to see the new message centre removed completely and the old one brought back!
If we have to keep the new message centre then i would prefer to have subject lines for each email as it was before.
Also as someone else said, if someone is removed from the site for fraud or abuse, a fake or bot profile, then the message should not be shown in the message centre, and the name of the profile should also be removed. It should be as it was in the old message centre and state that this persons profile has been removed for fraud or abuse of the terms of use.
Personally i'm sick and tired of seeing fake and scam profiles on here, this is the NUMBER ONE complaint from male members!
When is the site going to take action to stop or seriously limit the amount of fake and scam profiles that are approved onto the site?
The site keeps tinkering about with this and that, change something here or there, but consistently ignore this prblem of fake profiles which is brought up by the members time and time again.
Unless you effectively deal with this issue then no matter what you do you will continue to lose paying members.

I think this person PERFECTLY outlined the major issues that most don't like in the new message center. I also would prefer the 'choice' to use the new OR the old as I seriously LOVED the old version over this one. I didn't want a 'chat center' for messages, I wanted an 'inbox for messages'. There is absolutely nothing I Like at all about the new message center and have said so. This person totally wrote out just about EVERYTHING I was thinking. The 'filter' as you call it is not a filter per se, it is a way to sort things actually. The older 'filter' was an actual filter and sorted the messages to the folder for us and was NOT in the general mass of messages that we now have to scroll through with no subject lines, many of which seriously said what the content was going to be like (or lack there of in most cases) and we could easily delete or move them. There is no way to cut down the clutter at all with this new system as they are all there as opposed to the old center where yes, you would show more than one message from the same person, but the NEW ones were readily seen and we could move them to a folder that we wanted them to be in if we wanted them in one. No 'quick replies' either. I could readily SEE the location and the age of someone and delete or do whatever I wanted rapidly. You had a 'trash' bin where as now you delete and that is it. Make a mistake oh well!! I could 'choose' if I wanted to keep a message using the 'save message' check box option where now it is there like it OR NOT. You can't even delete parts of a conversation it is all or nothing.

I just seriously hate everything about this new message center.

I Agree with this also.. please give US the option to use the new center or the old one at the very least! I think you would be surprised at how many would gladly use the old center in a heart beat. There isn't even a way to turn off the emails section like we used to using the filters and things to weed out stuff.

As for the fakes, the number of FAKE PHOTOS from the men is totally on the rise. I can't tell you how many profiles I see daily that have stolen porn photos on their profiles. Come on, you can't tell me that "I" can find these are porn photos and someone there can't????

I totally agree with you rdy2try4. It should not be upto the members here to police the site by using Tineye or google images and then reporting fake profile photos to the site. The site should be doing this themselves during the profile review process or the photo review process each time a photo is uploaded to the site.
The site just looks like a joke when you use Tineye to check a profile photo and it shows up dozens of results on porn sites.
If members can find this out then why the hell can't the site do it?????
Some of the profile photos i've seen on here don't even need a check on Tineye or google images, as i've seen pics of Elvis, Tom cruise, and other well known global stars. Why the hell were these profile pics approved in the first place?.
Why was this comment i made denied?
Nothing i said here was against the terms of use of the site and despite the site saying reason: banned_topic, what i said does link into the message centre because of messages from fakes and scammers still showing in the new message centre when the profile has been removed from the site for fraud or abuse of the terms of use.
If you think the issue of fake and scam profiles is off topic Andrew then why don't you post a separate blog thread on fake and scam profiles and allow the members to put their point of view over on the issue?

As a standard member I am still not allowed to reply to e-mails and that bothers me because I do try and respond to each one even if it is that the answer they desire. Is this going to stay this way as a lure to become a paying member?
