Sorry to hear about the surgery and the firing. I walked into work one Monday morning after 25yrs only to be shown the door. Luckily, because I was so dedicated to work, I had saved up the max of my vacation time so had 12 wks to find another job. And interesting 3 yrs to say the least before I found a real job to settle down in. Older white men with a history of higher than normal salaries "need not apply."

I read your posts and thought there are obvious differences, yet there are many similarities. I grew up in a very small rural farming community west of Peoria. I could not have had a better place to spend my early childhood years. And yet it was perfectly horrible place for me mum who grown up in London with a fairly well off father who lost everything, including his life, during the war. Poor mum. I think it did her in as she was both a social and physical recluse. When we kids got sick, you pretty much took care of yourself. Hugs and loving tender attention were not to be. But growing up in such a rural setting in the 50's... so much like what is depicted in the movie A Christmas Story.

Alas, then my father took a job up SW of Chicago at secretive national laboratory. Only at my mother's insistence, after two years, did he move the family to be with him. A skirts chaser from my earliest memories of him. My dad did a LOT of things wrong in his life, especially concerning me mum but I've come to understand why he did some of the things he did, like having women on the side. Not excusing it but understanding. Kids often grow up in the shadow of their parents peccadilloes and swearing never to be/do the same. In some areas I've more than succeeded not to be like him while in others I'm hopelessly lost to follow in his footsteps.

Life is an interesting journey. Thank you for sharing a bit from your life's journey. When I was in college, once a month all us men would gather in the central dorm room for what we called, "Life Stories." Eventually all of us got to share our life story. It was so fascinating to hear how each individual had wandered through life up to that point. It never ceased to interest me and I dare say, that was true of the other fellows as well because it was always a packed audience.

if you have hangouts or the new g ogle chat, send me an invite a Rita1120nrj gm ail. I rarely make it into the city any more, especially now that it has turned so violent but I do miss enjoying a slice of Geno's East pizza.
