My husband was gearing up for this type of lifestyle before his death. One of the smartest things he did was decide to depend on propane, rather than solar. The batteries to store solar were expensive at the time, and the other means of solar - selling it back to electric company did no good if something happened to the power lines. So, a huge tank, 1,000 gallons, filled when propane was cheaper, and propane has a much longer shelf life for generator use rather than gasoline. Our hot water, stover and dryer are run on propane. Last time it was filled up was 5 years ago. The tank is still a 1/3 full.

I try to be as self-sufficient as possible, and have had good experience with growing a vegetable garden. That's an ideal option as long as one doesn't take summer vacations, which I like to do. Now that I am living alone and don't have anyone to take over in the week or so that I am gone, I don't grow my own anymore.

What are those green vegetables? Is that a squash? I'm a little envious of the 'off the grid' people.... I'm probably as far 'on the grid' as you can get.
