......just walk away lawless wrote about a person who sucked the air out of a room. i met one last week when my niece and i shared a table at the tom rush concert with folks we didn't know. my friend had comped us so we were up front at symphony hall on the floor - great seats and it was jammed. my niece the only person without a walker... and she was feeling a tad out of place to begin with. anyway, we sat and shook hands with the couple. nice guy, sort of '60's turned banker but her...well she was wearing mink and in this crowd, that's a nono. the giant waft of perfume had already killed any small creatures within 100 yards so i shoved my bag under the table without fear while mya hacked up a lung. the rule for concerts is no phones...that's just a rule. everyone knows that, right? finally an usher came down and told her she had to put it away but she just put it on vibrate and continued to take calls. i can only imagine how critical they were. as the show started, she began to talk loudly to her husband about each and every performer. while i admit jonathan edwards did indeed look like hell (in my opinion more like a skeletal pedophile) it was a thought i kept to myself. the fact that he was barefoot in 20 degree weather also seemed a tad over the top. the 17 minute acapella life song while enrapturing most of the audience, left me ina place of abject horror. i truly was worried that he had lost his mind. and one look at my niece would have sent me into that hysterical laughter that comes only at funerals or in churches. i looked at my clenched hands and prayed for somber thoughts. but then she of the constant comments said, "will this never end?" so loudly that Edwards looked right at us and so i turned to her and said.........shhh, this is a masterpiece." mya pinched me. yes, i lied. but at least she stopped with the phone and twisting in her seat. i mean we were literally in the damn front row of tables. at the end of the song he came to the edge of the stage shook my hand. i was humiliated. mya was gleeful. she took a picture. i will have her killed if she posts it. so here is the point. when you are sitting with someone who is an egg sucking dawg as solar would say, you have two choices - shoot em right away, or just walk away. otherwise, you are just bound to get into trouble. sighs. oh, rush was pretty good for an old fart.....took me back and made me smile. so did bateau. and i love the steel guitar. but as mya said, lot of high foreheads and canes. we were riding an old for sure. You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

Shoot that egg-sucker! God--I hate freakin' perfume! Especially that old-lady crap! I'd have shot her just for that, alone. Sounds utterly delightful, oui-oui. (17 minutes of acapella? --That's like Latin, or something; ain't it?-- Jesus.) I got a cane. The forehead's risin' fast, too. But you'll never find a better ride.  Solar...

People using cell phones in defiance of social rules and courtesy is fast becoming my number 1 peeve. I vote for shoot them right away--immediately put them in their place and let them know you won't tolerate poor behavior. Never ignore those who care for you you will have lost diamonds while you were collecting stones

I'll agree that Tom Rush is a pleasure best served in memory, WickedE. (and have you heard Joni Mitchell in the last XX years? ... not to be gossipy) But like most fading boomer songsters, we remember the songs of our youth more by remembering our youth, rather than the great voices or guitar picking. Did he do the "remember" song? I had a buddy who could sing & play The Panama Limited (only after more than a few beers) we thought at least as well as Tom Rush. But I digress As to poor etiquite, when I'm really feeling agressive, I'll say "Your mother would be ashamed of you!" in a most scornful tone. Either that works or it goes straight over their head. IF the later, then yep, just shoot 'em. Your neice gets hugs KUDOS for accompanying you. But now she's got a story she can tell, and told properly it will be better and better as the years progress. Now I'll go dig out a Tom Rush CD and remember. Chas

Oh my. Sounds like quite a night. 17 minute acapella? Yikes! Sounds like some of the various shows I've attended put on by my creative friends over the years. What does one say at the end of something like that? "Thank you so much for sharing what was in your heart?" Snork!  Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale Her infinite variety. I was able to hear Jonathan Edwards sing "Sunshine" on a booze cruise around Boston Harbor 30 years ago. He sang with Jon Pousette Dart and Livingston Taylor. For the scenery and the memory and those 3 clear voices, I will always be a fan.
