 Sadly, ghosting is now embedded in *mainstream* behavior. Just as it is no longer rude to neither return phone calls nor acknowledge voice mails (I suspect e-mails are also headed to the dustbin social interaction), blowing people off has become less the exception and more the *rule*.

It's still worth thinking about the *why* of such pathetic manners. Three common rationalizations are time-worn and (at some level) make sense:

1. Fear - if the encounter puts personal safety at risk (a drug deal or connecting with a sex worker), nerves will be very much on edge.
2. Reluctance to cause or receive pain - if the meeting will result in anguish (breaking up, not being able to repay a debt or follow through on a commitment...even a dental appointment), again dark clouds will disrupt good judgment.
3. Depression - people lapse into paralyzing funks and suspend everything in their life. An impending meeting could simply be collateral damage or even a base cause of the melancholy.

While any of these three *could* make a meet-up initiated in this community a non-starter, they seem unlikely causalities. Two other pressure-points seem more likely:

4. Potential confrontation/denouement: too many nascent friendships in this community are founded on lies and deception and it's not surprising that the harsh realities that would be revealed by a face-to-face could trigger a full retreat.

5. Sadistic trolling: I've commented elsewhere that this sickness is also pervasive. The convenience and anonymity of cyber-space facilitate ghosting as a twisted amusement.

While none of the above is intended (nor should it) make us feel better about ghosting, it should at least make us grateful that such personality defects have been revealed before more time and energy are wasted.
