.....being an AMERICAN

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.
But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American.
There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all.
We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

i'm British but live in Greece so my loyalty lies with both and very easily too.

We are all human and if we treated all with dignity, compassion whether black, white or pink,no matter what religion no matter where from in the World we share it would be an easier place to be,for all.

One earth one planet one kind

Gotta go with Teddy on this one. If you call yourself an American, then by God be one. There are no gray areas, there are no almosts; you either are or you ain't. Period. You are no longer a person of the place of origin once you take the oath of allegience. You are an American, and share in the heritage of THIS nation now. You are due the same rights and priviledges of those born here.

You also share the same responsibilities to protect this country and all of our interests. Ain't no such thing as African American, European American, Oriental American, Muslim American, ect.. You are either an American or you are not.

If you are here illegally, you deserve no more quarter than any of the other criminals get under out laws. Wanna be an American? Go through the red tape like every other legal immigrant, study, take the test for citizenship and join us. We are in a state of war with a hidden enemy and can no longer tolerate border jumping. Come in through the front door with your face showing.

If your own country is so screwed up that conditions there are impossible, fight them and straighten that mess out at home or fill out the papers for a visa here and come in the right way. But don't squal and bellow when we take you to the airport or border and force you to leave when you are determined to have entered this country illegally.

Those are the rules. They apply to all countries around the world as far as I know, and I've been a lot of places.

Don't like that? Leave. You are not an American if you can't live under our set of laws. Later

I am proud of my heritage. I am even more proud of the fact that when I trace my genealogy, I can find the records of my family arriving legally through Ellis Island. I also know my Great Grand Father, my Grandfather and my Father are decorated United States military veterans. All proud to have given their service to their country.
I am all for LEGAL immigration to the United States. This is what makes us a culturally diverse and strong nation. Please name another country in the world that is as permissive and easy to enter and remain illegally. And without the threat of prison if caught. I cannot find one!
Viva la immigration! Become a contributing CITIZEN of this country. But, if you enter this country as a criminal, expect to be treated as a criminal!

I agree with what Teddy Roosevelt. You need to enter this country in a legal way. Approving illegal immigration is promoting an illegal way of doing things to achieve goals. I don't beieve in that and I am hispanic. We need to know who is crossing our borders to keep our country secure. It is unfair to others who chose to enter our country legally. I believe in alliance to one country. I also believe in speaking in the language the constitution was written. Immigrants should assimilate to our country, not the other way around. God bless America!
