"Phishing" messages - proceed with caution

Below is an interesting exchange of messages that I had earlier this week. This person appears to be searching for some personal information (e.g. email address) to use for their personal gain.

I find it fascinating (and hard to believe) that someone would give this person their personal contact information w/in three messages - especially since their grammar is off, and they are just sending generic emails.

A word of advice - proceed with caution when having initial conversations (and meet ups too).

Initial message:
So sorry to infringe on your privacy,Its said that 'A picture is worth a thousand words, but when I saw yours,it was more than words could explain. The charming profile is irresistible, though a little personal message but your look tells a lot about a nice person...so i had to drop a message to the charming person with this great profile.Just want to know you better and be a friend or more. Hope to hear from you sometime

My response:
You did not infringe on my privacy, but I question if you really read my profile or if this is just a standard message you send people.

Second message:
Yes i really do read your message and i ill like to get to know more about you if you dont mind

My response (to see if they are truly real):
Good morning - I do not mind at all, I look forward to getting to know you as well. Did you have a nice weekend?

Third message:
Great, thanks for getting back to me and for your lovely comment about me as well...I ill really love to get to know more about you but the problem is that i often come online here wont you mind if you could drop your contact something like email address for some chat

My response: none

People run these sorts of scams because they work. I've been studying the Internet for damn near a decade and I'm still amazed that people fall for this sort of thing. But, they ran these sorts of "lonely hearts" scams long before the Internet and I bet they will be running them long after whatever follows it.

I get those as well.

Sometimes I phish them back, but usually NUKE the bastards, cause they're about as real as a three dollar bill.

usually they are tow or three day wonders, depending on WHO they've viewed and written to.

I turn them into the Abuse Dept, and then they be gone, POOF !!!

This so true, but people have been running scams long before puter's !
Did u ever see the movie, Paper Moon, google it!
If u would like to know how the Internet evolved, ask me, I was there!
No, I did not invent it, was in the "trench's" helping making it work!

Great post coming on the heels of Gypsy's. I cannot be bothered answering these goons. I have much better things to do with my time than play " let me catch you" games. I with sphxdiver on this

Oh, when I have found such messages, I usually just ignore them too. I will admit, there was a few times I just played with them a bit first...lol Like the first thing to do is to give them a wrong email address, or just a bad email address... It might be the second thing to do too, yes, just another address with one letter changed. Or just give them the email address of the Department of Justice Internet crimes department...lol That last one also works very well when someone you want nothing to do with - wants your email address to send you nude pictures...lol

But understand, yes there are very real scammers out there. But, also understand - there are also a few play scammers out there. And often in this situation, the grammar will purposely be off a bit. It's kind of like the kind of person that likes to start fights in a blog. The whole point, and purpose - is just entertainment for them.

So many out there looking to steal your personal information on here.. Too many for my liking. Why you have to be very careful. It seems we all get some really good emails on here not just the women but the men too like yours. When it is too good to be true.. Proceed with caution I always say. hugssss V

Yes, I know the movie very well, no need for me to Google it.

FWIW, I'm studying for my PhD and one of the classes I teach is all about communication technology. I wasn't at the start of the Internet, but I can tell you chapter and verse about how it evolved and the institutions that were first online. *I* was using computers at the start of the World Wide Web and can tell you how radically it changed communication and culture.
And I think the word is spelled "y-o-u" not "u".
