Oversharing - that permission thing

Neil: Oi David

David Glover: What?

Neil: Uh nothing

David Glover: Twat

The above is a snatch of dialogue from the TV version of The Inbetweeners. I bring this up because it's always tickled me that a friend of mine - the Real David Glover had his name used in this series. I happen to know the character is named after my friend as the co-writer of The Inbetweeners, Damon Beesley, went to school with him. I always assumed that the use of David's name was ironic - in the series David Glover is moody, threatening and is superior to the main characters, the real David Glover is a gentle giant and is very humble. The real David Glover is a farmer, I bumped into his brother last week and we went for a tractor ride. Eventually I turned the convo to his brother and this happened:

Matt: I've always meant to ask you - how much does David get teased about being named after a character in The Inbetweeners? (Cue blank look . . .)

Matt: You know there's a character in that called David Glover right?

Steve: No Matt I had no idea

Matt: Do you think he knows himself?

Steve: I doubt it

Matt: Ohhhh - I thought they chose his name because he's so laid-back he wouldn't object - the David Glover in the TV show is a tough nut - nothing like Dave

Steve: Ahhhh David wasn't like how is now at school - he wanted to fight everybody

Well well well, so it turns out Damon Beesley has been a trifle reckless and didn't ask permission to use Dave's name - a person that could easily traced back to his real childhood, meaning the usual legal disclaimer 'Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental' is not valid when it comes to The Inbetweeners.

David Glover in The Inbetweeners - the Real David Glover is twice the size and has a 10th of the attitude

I raise the issue of permission because this year I've also been a member of another dating website that celebrates the abundance of marine life. When I look at the pics on this site I think 'Has the world gone mad?' - people think it's okay to post pics of themselves and their brothers/sisters, themselves and their , themselves and their parents, themselves and their friends. I guess the posters think this is okay and harmless - really it isn't - in most cases they won't have asked permission and a lot of the people in the pics shouldn't be shown on dating websites, at all, ever! This became a live issue for me when I came across a profile of a woman just down the road from me who had a pic including one of my friends - my friend is married, happily married, not looking for attention, and has a rather large quick-to-anger husband. It's going to be a really interesting conversation next time I see her . . .

While a lot of people look down on casual dating websites like this one - at least people aren't allowed to post those 'hey I've got friends too' keeping-up-appearances bullshit photos including themselves and 2/3 strategically slightly less hot than them friends. Yes people show off their naked bodies or lingerie on A F F - but that's how you'll actually see them if you play your cards right instead of seeing a bunch of hen night/birthday/day at the races glam pics that bear no relationship to how people normally present themselves in everyday life (and you Will be sharing everyday life with them if you have a full-on relationship).
