The Humor in Life (or It Sounds So Elegant En Français)

In my odd but joyous netflix experience (I don't recommend it... it feeds into my addictive personality), I came across something that made me laugh. Time to share.

Concierge doctors are all the rage for the rich and powerful. It amounts to a time share version of what the truly rich and powerful already enjoyed with personal physicians. What made me laugh was the origin of the word concierge.

For the American version and referring to the doctors I mentioned, it is a specialized, personalized, boutique offering. One would want a concierge doctor, as he or she would be available with priceless expertise, at your beck and call, and as you felt the need.

Why I laughed was because, as I swirl down into the belly of the beast that is netflix entertainment, I have been watching an increasing number of foreign films. Please don't take this as me being cultured, as boredom is driving the bus here, but I do enjoy a movie with subtitles when it is done well. The movie I was watching is in French and Spanish, with English subtitles. And, in case anyone was wondering, the term concierge did come up.

Concierge, en français, means janitor. While one might conceivably use a concierge doctor to clean up a mess one might wish not to go public, it seems unlikely that the fees would be similar if the name were changed to fully English. Janitor doctor doesn't have the ring to it that concierge doctor does.

I thought I'd share. My favorite French line in a movie is and will always be, “Sacre merde!” (used, perhaps too literally, on Master and Commander). I stick with the classics.
