If you ever suspect the person you are talking to is not honest about his/her whereabouts then here's one way to get closer to the truth.

I will now show you one way of tracing where an email is sent from. By using the header information of a received email we can find the IP-address of the sender and use this for tracing. Not all email providers send the same header format and also not all email programs show the same header info (no joy in Outlook). Here I am using Yahoo mail.

  • Ask person to send email to your Yahoo address

  • Right-click the received mail and choose "View Full Header" (#1)

  • Scroll down until you find "Received from" and copy the IP-address (#2)

  • Log on to ip-adress.com/ip_tracer and paste in the address in top left corner (#3)

  • Bingo! What a surprise! Sent from Lagos, Nigeria! (#4)
