OK I admit it

OK I admit it

I do get emotional.

I watched Extreme Makeover home edition tonight and my eyes tear at what those homes mean to the people. At the generosity. At the way the community lines up in support.

I remember there are those who aren't in the spotlight at habitat for humanity who are building homes.

But I think, ok, they build a big home and then say they had trouble paying the heating bill for their old house. How will they do it now? This family had 13 . Now they have a big house. I wonder about the rest of the things that family needs. Great to have a big kitchen but what about food to cook in it.
What about health care?
The house is just the beginning.
What happens when the sheets for all those new beds need replacing? The were sleeping on the floor and on couches? Where is the money going to come from for the water bill that will skyrocket washing all the new sheets, blankets, towels, etc?

The beginning of the story is touching. I'd like to know the rest of the story.

That's a good point and I'd not thought about the maintenance aspect of it. Interesting. {=}

From the comments it appears that others and even the show had thought of the maintenance issues after building the nice houses.

OMG!!!! YOU READ MY MIND!!!! I was sitting there last night wondering who I could email to ask that VERY QUESTION! Now don't get me wrong....I think it is absolutely wonderful that they do this...but even the host said that they could barely put food on the table. So now that the electricity bill, water bill, gas bill, etc. will be HUGE....how will they manage?????

I would like to revisit some that they have helped in this way over the past two years and see how they have been able to maintain these homes. I really wonder about this. And again...I'm not taking anything away from the wonderful gifts that have been given these families, but if they lose the nice new homes because they can't maintain them....then they don't even have the small cramped homes they started with!

According to a few comments they do provide some method for folks to afford the new houses they provide. Not sure in what form.

I never thought about what happens afterwards. You should write the station and see if they are planning to revisit some of these families.

It appears they do provide for the families so they can afford the new homes; according to some other comments.
It would be cool if they did visit them after a year or so as a follow up.

I too wonder how they manage. In my area there was a similar situation and a group went in and totally redid the house. It was beautiful when they finished it, inside and out. Trouble was, they were only physical changes. Within a few years, the home was torn down because of the destruction and damage done by the people that lived there. No respect for themselves or the people that put time energy and money into the project. It is my hope that those chosen to be on such shows are well deserving and simply have fallen on hard times for one reason or another, and this gift simply motivates them to do better.

Cast not pearls before swine. I guess that is where that saying comes from. Why give the charity of a new home to someone when they aren't going to take care of it.

Yeah...nobody ever thinks of the "after-effects"
Like how everyone wishes they could win a million dollars...

But what about the TAXES you end up having to PAY after you win it

It appears they did think of the after effects on the show and do provide a way for the people to afford the new homes they have been given.

At least I'm not the only one who had similar thoughts and it seems that the folks responsible for the show did too. It would be a terrible waste and I would feel they only did it for ratings if they didn't ensure they could maintain the homes.
