Bad Head

Ha ha, I know what everyone is thinking, but it is not that. I made it through harvest. Got my cover crops in and only have selling my crops left. I began the year with the idea of shutting my construction business down, and farming full time. I had not done any row cropping in 20 years and had pretty well gotten rid of all my row crop equipment. I started the year with my tractors and a plow, and had to buy everything else I had the idea of doing this out of pocket instead of borrowing money from the bank. No need in making money for the bank.
Buying new equipment was out of the question so I searched high and low for deals and the longest trip I had to make was 350 miles away to buy a cultivator. I even bought a combine only 2 miles from my farm. That is the subject for the title of this post. Ha ha. The combine gathers the crop, separates' the grain and cleans the chaff and other materials. The head is what cuts the crop and puts it all into the combine, and that is where my problem was. I was losing soybeans when the reel would shove the soybeans towards the cutter, the soybeans were so dry the pods were opening up and soybeans were falling out on the ground. The head was a rigid model so I was fighting to get low enough to get all the soybeans without getting dirt into the head. Bottom line is the rigid head caused me to leave 10-15 thousand dollars worth of soybeans in the field. So a bad head cost me to much money. Ha ha
The bottom line is I am still well in the black for this year, but I will have a better head for the upcoming year. My last construction job is done, all I have to do with it is collect the last payment which is on the agenda for tomorrow then I am ready for winter.
Hope everyone has a great day,

Mmm ..... Big, and I'm learning a stack here in Blogland! Special "snow blowers" to "rigid heads" on cutters! Usually though, "rigid" is good, eh?! Are you having snow now as well? Enjoy your winter anyway!

Ha ha yes normally rigid is a good thing, but sometimes you need just a little flexibility to do the job in the best way possible. Ha ha we have had temperatures down to -4 degrees with a 15-20 mph winds. Pretty cool. Having a few lambs. If it was easy everyone would be doing it. Ha ha. I hope you are not getting to hot down your way
