Was It Wrong To Give An Opinion?

"It were not best that we should all think alike; it is difference of opinion that makes races." - Mark Twain

It all happened right before my eyes as I endure public lashing for a review I made personally on social media recently. The catalyst to this is due to my recent visit to a newly opened mini-mart that sells nothing but imported junk food and drinks. It was the talk of town and everyone wants to have a visit and buy something out of the store. I hesitated on going to the mart for a few times, turning down invitations to visit due to the massive crowds going in and out of the place. Everyone wants a piece of action in the brand spanking new toilet.

On one fine afternoon, the crowd were not as many and I happened to pass by. So I decided to drop in and have a look what's the rave is all about. Immediately upon entering the store, the strong smell of bubble gum hits your nose. The more you smell it, the more you feel that you are going to barf. The mart is superbly disorganized. There are empty boxes everywhere, shop items were a big pile of mess, sticky floor, and puddle of water being left in styrofoam box (not sure how long has it been left there as there's a layer of dust on the water surface).

The shop indeed sells nothing but imported junk food and drinks. What hits my eye would be Tokyo Banana, the super popular custard-filled banana cake from Japan. Upon reaching out to grab a box, I found out that it's not the original Tokyo Banana! It's called Le Pan Banana which is made in Thailand and this counterfeit banana shaped cake costs heftily. Immediately I just had to let it go as it is not a price anyone would be sane enough to pay for. I wonder around further to the back of the fridge and saw plenty of people crowding around the nearly empty fridge. Everyone just crowds around there with lots of hoo hah's around... it's so bizarre! When the crowd disperse, what I saw is just a few cans of Japanese canned coffee. And again, the price is not something you would pay for much less for a coffee... in a can that is.

I stayed for a while longer and notice that there are plenty more overpriced junk food and majority of these junk food are imported from Taiwan, China and Thailand. There are a few placards placed around the store, written only in Chinese. As I am not Chinese educated, I know nothing about what the placard message is all about and not really bothered to find out what was written with the shopkeeper as there's onle ONE staff around manning the cashier. Without further wasting my time, I left the store... stumbling upon a few that's almost half my age, making lots of noise on the purchases that they have just made while blocking my exit path. Looking at those just hits me in the gut that the current generation of knows nothing about the weakening of the local currency and buying overpriced imported stuffs at the expense of their parents fortune.

I went home and told my family what I saw and they just went dumbstruck. Days passed and I went to social media to have a look at the store website. Mix reviews was given and I've made a decision to put a review of my own... in hopes that the business owner will understand the condition of their newly open mart and that they are overcharging food items than they should have.

The backlash came a few hours later from the marts petty fanatics... from saying that the store offers the BEST and CHEAPEST imported junk food in the region... to a very long winding statement of defense by another fan stating that I'm simply giving a bias review without understanding the condition of how the store is being managed, on item inflation how the items are reasonably priced, and to top it off that it's a shame to be a Chinese not knowing on how to read Chinese. Jumping to the mart defense is fine, but to the extend of saying my opinion is wrong is clearly not cool. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, be it right or wrong. My opinion is based on my sole visit to the store. Was it wrong to provide an opinion to begin with? I'm at a lost of words.

Sounds like the people who manage their social media account sent in cyber troopers against you - which is quite a common thing.

Not having read your review, it could have triggered off something. However don't sweat it though. Everyone is always entitled to their own opinion.

Wannabe/Sexpot - which one do you want me to be?

I totally agree with you...I'm in the States, but the Asian stores around here is just horrible...

they always sell knockoff of Japanese items...for the price that is tripled...i can understand of them adding the cost of importing to the price, but still, for that kind of low quality and the price? unacceptable...i would not pay for the authentic Japanese product for that kind of price....

those young ones doesn't think like that...hell, the parents probably handed everything to them, to make them happy...so they don't know the worth of money...

not to mention, the condition of the stores are so scary...you better check the expiration date...one time, i found packages of frozen Gyoza which had been expired for the last three years...how the fuck that is even ok?

Opinions are good...especially backed by the facts....Some people just can't accept the different opinions...

Cultural differences may play a part in these kinds of things, so I am not sure how valuable my opinion might be.

(BTW...so excited to see another SG1 fan. I'm convinced that show is significantly underrated.)

Cultural differences and perhaps age gap could be a factor.

Nothing wrong in providing any opinion. Younger generation nowadays can't seem to take that as a way to improve themselves. Imported junk food n drinks cost a bomb n even for me, I won't spend unnecessarily for junk food that did not have any beneficial value to our health but it's loaded with msg, salt n sugar.

Very true!! The younger generations doesn't really take opinions to improve themselves and see themselves as better than the rest. We're all baffled at how kids these days are brought up. Tsk! Tsk!
