Mass shootings

People get upset about mass deaths from guns. They are shocking and senseless and tragic. But also becoming slightly "normal".

Still if senseless mayhem is annoying, then normal gun violence should be more troubling. Most of the senseless gun deaths are suicides. About 30,000 a year. Accidental deaths are another 20,000 or so. Murders and robberies that lead to death are about 10,000 or so a year. The mass death toll is only about 1100 in shootings of more than four people at a time. So the ordinary deaths by guns is a problem that is about 60 times worse than the mass shooting death problem. In terms of the of dead people resulting from gun use.

Every death is terrible and tragic. But we should do something to stop the 60,000 per year death problem and not just agonize about the 1100 deaths per year problem.

My concept is very simple. Fewer guns means fewer people get shot. Sell fewer, buyback more, destroy guns, license guns and require registration fees and classes to maintain the right to possess guns. Guns don't kill people by themselves, people using guns kill people. Knives or hammers can also kill people, but it is much harder work and takes more time, allowing the people in the area to flee to safety while the criminal is busy stabbing and slashing his first victim.

I don't blame guns for being the elegant, efficient tools they are. I blame people for using these tools and society for allowing the love affair with guns to kill so many.

We are emotional foolish animals who are not good at controlling our murderous impulses. We do not deserve to have the power to kill so easily. Until we learn to control human nature we are doomed to kill each other and ourselves senselessly.

If we care so much about the unborn how about some care for the born ones walking around? Pro life should mean anti-gun violence and death.

If every life is important why not try to cut down the normal death and damage that guns bring in suicides and accidents that are 50 or 60 times worse than the yearly totals from mass shootings?
