Human rights

The US has lots of problems and struggles to become that utopia we imagine. The guns and hatred are depressing of course. The drought and the tremendous income disparity when so many are so needy. The homeless, the crazy and the inconsiderate all annoy me as life should be more fair.

Still, there is a reason so many leave their home country to seek the good life in the US.

For an education try reading the US State Department report on human rights for most countries that are not in Europe, Canada, New Zealand or Australia. Very depressing stuff.

China, PRC is a good case example. 63 pages of terrible behavior. Including killing at least 3,000 or so for various crimes each year. Torture, unfair trials, detention for seeking legal redress or due process. The abuses go on and on. Millions of convictions for crimes with a few hundred acquittals. Bribery and corruption are rampant. A year of pre-trial detention is normal. Political activists are treated much worse...

So the US disappoints the dreamers, but here we can at least dream openly.

Bigotry and prejudice has a long history. Progress is the result of a long road and many battles. I am impressed there has been some major changes in the last few years. The next battleground is job protection for LBGT as about half of the workers are now protected, which means half are not. Freedom is not free. You have to fight for your rights in this imperfect world.
