Oscars

So I spent 4.5 hours watching the Oscars. Curious about how some films I enjoyed would fair in this popularity contest. Glad that Cate Blanchett was recognized for her great performance in Blue Jasmine. Matt Maconahey deserved honor for his efforts in Dallas Buyers Club and other performances. I thought he was even better in "Mud".

I was also pleased that "12 years a slave" won for best pic. I have not seen the film because I do not want to explore that violence and human suffering. I will probably have to see it sometime. A needed antidote to the white washing of slavery the movies provide in films such as Gone with the Wind. The revisionist South still would have us believe the negros were happy being slaves. Not so. sexual assault, brutality, violence, intimidation and deprivation of liberty and human rights is not nice. And occasional murder. Destruction of the family and human bonds. A holocaust that lasted for centuries. The good news? A trip from Africa to the US, but at what cost?

Chris Rock likened America to a favorite uncle who buys you stuff, but also molests you as a ... A real mixed blessing...
