SEX: How much is too much?

Having sex regularly is important in a relationship, regardless of the sex drive ratio. People with high sex drives may get frustrated and irritable if they dont have regular sex. However, excessive sex may be inimical to a mans health, reports Muda Oyeniran.

Sex, apart from being a means of procreation in human beings, is also a pleasurable and instinctual act. As a therapeutic method, experts say it has no equal. This is why some people will go to any length to have it while many, especially males would easily pay for it. This is responsible for the increase in the number of prostitutes and sexually transmitted diseases especially HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea, syphilis and so on.

Research has shown that some people go into marriage principally because of the assurance of regular sex. Apart from this, many marriages have broken down irretrievably because of the inability of one partner to satisfy the sexual desires of the other or when the couples dont enjoy sex together leading to infidelity and its attendant unpleasant consequences.

As good as sex is, the question one may wish to ask is: How much of it is ideal and how much is excessive? How much is healthy for the body? So, should couples have it every day or on a certain number of days in a week?

Although opinions differ on these, experts believe that moderation is the key.

For example excessive sex has been associated with physical injuries. According to medical experts, indulgence in excessive sex may lead to strain muscles, head injury, soreness and swelling due to the scrapping of vaginal walls(in ladies); dehydration(due to burning of calories, working up a sweat and losing lots of water); Urinary Tract Infection(UT in women, low back pain and injured nerves.

Others include: trouble finishing or reaching orgasm in males (males semen level and sperm reserve both go down if he doesnt give his body time to recharge.

More consequences of having excessive sex within a short time span, according to experts, include heart attack (though not common) and fracture.

According to Dr Maltida Kerry of George Kerry foundation Lagos, at a seminar in Lagos, the ideal frequency of sex between couples is three times in a week. While underscoring the immense health benefits of regular sex between married couples, she cautioned against excessive indulgence in the act.

She explained that healthy sex helped to prolong life by over ten years. Orgasm helps to release certain hormones that help to reduce stress; that is why couples sleep almost immediately after sex. A sex session burns about 200 calories which is approximately 15 minutes on a treadmill. Sex reduces chances of prostate cancer in men by up to 33 per cent. However too much sex reduces the immune system, she added.

A Consultant Urologist at the Isolo General Hospital, Dr Shittu Gbadamosi, attributed the lowering of the immune system to nutrition deficiencies relating mainly to loss of ejaculate. According to him, the seminal fluid is high in zinc and requires much vitamin B6 and Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish oil and linseed oil.

Deficiency of these is widespread, especially in teenage boys with frequent loss of seminal fluid. Zinc deficiency also leads to underdeveloped male sexual organs and later in life to enlargement of the prostate gland, he added

According to him, individuals who have sex once or twice a week show 30 per cent higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A, which is known to boost the immune system adding that too much sex is not good.

Speaking on the same issue, another physician at the Lagos Island General Hospital, Dr Kehinde Adekunle, said sex may become excessive if it is affecting an individuals normal daily living.

If sex or masturbation is leading you to miss school or work, causing you to fall behind in your responsibilities, or damaging your relationships, you may have a problem. Other behaviors associated with sexual addiction include multiple affairs (cheating on your partner), consistent use of pornography, unsafe sex , frequent phone or computer sex (cybersex), or use of prostitutes, exhibitionism, obsessive dating through the internet, sexual harassment, or , he explained.

Although he agreed that different people have different sex drives, he was of the view that moderation was the key. Everyone has their own individual sex drives. Some have a low ratio others have a medium sex drive and others have a high ratio sex drive. Having sex regularly is important in a relationship, regardless of the sex drive ratio. People with high sex drives may get frustrated and irritable, if they dont have regular sex. Sex calms them, makes them less frustrated and irritable. However, if you are having sex when you really dont want to, or if youre having so much sex that youre neglecting the rest of your life, you may have a problem, he added.
