Land Rush

What Was Oklahoma's 1889 Land Rush?
In the wake of the Civil War, the Creek and Seminole tribes ceded to the United States the so-called Unassigned Lands, territory that today comprises the Oklahoma counties of Canadian, Cleveland, Kingfisher, Logan, Oklahoma, and Payne. The area covered nearly 3,000 square miles and was not occupied by other American Indian tribes. To encourage settlement into this vast area, it was decided to hold a land rush on April 22, 1889. More than 50,000 people hoping to stake a claim to some of this land gathered on the periphery of the Unassigned Lands ready to race on horseback or by wagon to a plot of land that they could claim. Within this area, early communities to spring up included El Reno, Guthrie, Kingfisher, Norman, Oklahoma City, and Stillwater.
