ON YOUR MARKS, GET SET, GO Daley Thompson:  Daley Thompson:  Daley Thompson:  Carl Lewis:  Carl Lewis:  Very recently I came across the photograph of Daley Thompson, a British Olympian decathlete, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the question, 'Is the world’s 2nd greatest athlete gay?'. When I first came across this in the 1980s, I just dismissed it as attention-seeking bravado from Daley Thompson. But now, over 30 years later, I see Daley Thompson’s 'bravado' as provocative, insulting and even hateful. It was none of Daley Thompson’s business to 'out' Carl Lewis. How times change! I know it’s difficult to judge people in the past living under different standards than those accepted nowadays. But it was the 1980s, the decade of HIV/AIDS and increasing gay awareness and acceptance, and I now question my reaction at the time; all I can say is that it was a reflection of where I was at that time. The IAAF’s World Championships for track and field athletics very recently took place in London. It was the last time that Usain Bolt ran competitively (plus also the last time Mo Farah raced in a major championship). The World Championships didn’t follow the script; Usain Bolt lost out to Justin Gatlin, who received a very hostile reaction from the spectators because of his two previous doping bans, and Mo Farah didn’t follow up his win in the 10,000 metres with victory in the 5,000 metres. But that’s sport for you! Usain Bolt is a legend; he is the fastest man in the world (at least over 100 and 200 metres). Millions of people just wanted to see him run fast. The Jamaican sprinter transcends sport like no other sportsperson since Muhammad Ali. I think Usain Bolt is the best athlete the world has ever seen. I don’t think athletics will recover from Usain Bolt’s retirement for a very long time. Who do you think is the best track and field athlete ever? Do you enjoy watching track and field athletics? Do or did you do any track and field athletics? There’s Eunice Barber, Bob Beamon, Kenenisa Bekela, Sergey Bubka, Sebastian Coe (now the head of the IAAF), Jessica Ennis-Hill, Mo Farah, Allyson Felix, Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Cathy Freeman, Justin Gatlin, Haile Gebrselassie, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Florence Griffith Joyner, Yelena Isinbayeva, Michael Johnson, Marion Jones, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Carolina Klüft, Carl Lewis, Catherine Ndereba, Jesse Owens, Sanya Richards-Ross, David Rudisha, Javier Sotomayor, David Storl, Daley Thompson, Lasse Viren, David Weir and Jan Železný to consider as the world’s best track and field athlete, plus a few more I haven’t listed. I like watching athletics, especially track athletics in major championships. I like the 100 metres the best; there’s something primeval about watching the fastest person on the planet. At school I was an okay cross-country runner but I was useless on the track especially the short distance events. I was the tortoise, not the hare! Now a little bit older the 100 metres is a long distance event for me!

1. Jesse Owens, primarily for what he represented in such dark days in the lead up to WW2. 2. Loved it once upon a time, then the drug culture intervened. That started back in the late 60s and 70s, now it's in all track and field sports. I loved London 2012 all the same, it remains one of the sporting hiighlights of my life. 3. Nope, well, 1500m I was good at, then ran a few 10Ks and half marathons later in life. Haven't run for years though. I remember the DT event, I was furious, disgusted, a very close relative of mine was coming out at the time and DT's antics encouraged a few misplaced comments from people who should have known better. Curious too that the vast majority of the top track and field athletes are african background, I wonder what the whitey supremacists make of that.  Brilliant post as ever McP. I don't know much about athletics so really can't answer any of your questions. I have heard of Usain Bolt though and was sorry he didn't bow out with a win. ~~Anais Nin~~

Carl Lewis then Bolt but there is a new guy from Canada in town called degrass.. If he had not injured himself on this last race he would have the title now.. Yes I been watching track and field.. hugs V Become a blog watcher sweet_vm

Your left off Edwin Moses, an American former track and field athlete who won gold medals in the 400 m hurdles at the 1976 and 1984 Olympics. Between 1977 and 1987, Moses won 107 consecutive finals and set the world record in the event four times. For tgr lighter side Bruce(or should i say Caitlyn) Jenner, gold metal winner in the decathlon.

Who do you think is the best track and field athlete ever? Got to go for Mo. Do you enjoy watching track and field athletics? I do. I watched a lot of the recent World Championship. Do or did you do any track and field athletics? No, it was either football, rugby or cricket during my school years. I had to feel sad for Usain Bolt....one race too many?

i was a sprinter so i love field and track. Jackie Joyner Kersee is pretty high on my list. You cannot conceive the many without the one.

It's always difficult when a top athlete should retire. If they retire at their peak they only know they've peaked when they lose.
