NO VACATION FOR ME THIS YEAR

This post is my contribution to the thirty-second virtual symposium coordinated by the cult leaderess, pocogato12. Please visit the Virtual Symposium Group’s #32 Symposium Link Topic July:Summer Vacations to read other contributions to the 'Summer Vacations' virtual symposium.

Above is Nadiya Bychkova, the Ukrainian professional dancer newly recruited to BBC’s Strictly Coming Dancing show. The next series should be well worth watching!

Her photograph reminded me that I haven’t had or even booked a holiday this year. It looks as if a holiday is not going to happen this year - we say holiday here not vacation!

Things aren’t been helped because I haven’t renewed my passport and my girlfriend has already had two holidays and isn't looking to go on another one. So what I’m going to do is plan for a long and hopefully great holiday next year. There are four holidays I’m thinking about.

First is a road trip across America. My road trip would want to take in Santa Fe, San Francisco and New Orleans. And I want to venture into redneck territory!

Second is a houseboat holiday on the canals of Kerala in southern India. After watching a recent television documentary, I know that I can hire a private houseboat with staff to steer the boat, make meals and generally make me comfortable. I do like being pampered sometimes!

Third is a holiday in southern Spain. I’d like to take in Granada, Seville and Valencia. Seville is famous for its marmalade!

Fourth is a safari in Namibia in southern Africa. Though I’ve been to The Gambia many times, there are no big animals there except for crocodiles. In Namibia I will be able to see elephants, giraffes and rhinos.

Do you have any advice for me about these four holiday plans?
Of the four holiday destinations, what destination most tempts you?
What holidays/vacations have you had or got planned this year?

Now I know why Nadiya Bychkova’s photo reminded me of a holiday - it’s the road trip in America for me. I think she may be quite a good companion on the road trip and I’m sure my girlfriend would be cool about things!

I'm much better at planning a holiday than going on a holiday. It's easier!

You never mentioned Canada!!!
I am back to camping tomorrow until Sunday .......and next Friday, I'll be on Waikiki Beach!!!

Wasn't that a spectacular crash in the Tour De France!!!

spunkycumfun replies on 7/5/2017 12:54 pm:
That crash was spectacular. There's been a few already.
It's a shame that Mark Cavendish, who's chasing the most stage wins ever, has had to retire and that Peter Sagan has been kicked out - he's the Tour's superstar! I'm not sure Sagan's elbow was deliberate or whether he used his elbow to regain his balance.

The car your friend Nadiya is in looks similar to the 1955 Ford Customline I have.

Do you have any advice for me about these four holiday plans? If you come to the US you at least need to see Yosemite or Yellowstone.

Of the four holiday destinations, what destination most tempts you? New Orleans

What holiday/vacations have you had or got planned this year? None planned right now, maybe a few long weekends in the fall.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Visited New Orleans in, oh what? 1979???? What kind of number is that? Bourbon Street was great!
Divided between that and India!
Seville was my first port. Flew 3 planes that day to go join my first boat! The smell of pine... and the smile on my face...., but still divided.
They all sound amazing, why do you have to ask difficult questions?
Have no plans, but dreamed of many.
Happy planning!

Do you have any advice for me about these four holiday plans? I like your idea about the American road trip. I am a bit biased, but there is such a variety of things to see and do

Of the four holiday destinations, what destination most tempts you? Actually I would prefer to get back to Puerto Rico, but their severe fiscal crisis is influencing me for the first time 30 years to avoid it for a while

What holiday/vacations have you had or got planned this year? Probably like you, none this year

If you do the New Mexico trip, fly into Sunport in Albuquerque and drive to Santa Fe. Plan your trip through Albuquerque ( stop at the BioPark and Zoo) to the Turquoise Trail ( you can pull this up on the web easily and pick your stops) before you reach Santa Fe- it's an amazing adventure. A lunch visit to La Fonda in Santa Fe is a real treat. A stroll around the Governor's Palace and the artists' plaza is a marvelous sight as well as a visit inside the Saint Francis of Assisi Cathedral. The Super 8 3358 Cerrillos Rd is a good place to stay and the rate includes breakfast. Turn right out of the drive and you have to stop at TinNee Ann a gift boutique full of local goods by the Indians. Dinner might find you at Los Potrillos on the way back to the motel. I'd be happy to do you a travelogue so that you end up in Maine eating lobster, shrimp and clams

oh, the safari...........how wonderful to see such creatures, such land.

redneck USA? are you sure about that one? New Orleans is marvelous but there are some other parts of that area that are lean and mean.

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

I think Nadiya Bychkova has three spaces left in her car - just right for her sister, you and me. That would be one good road trip!

Stay well north of the Mason-Dixon line. But if you must, then don't forget to visit Richmond and Petersburg and the Civil War Battlefields. Belle Island was a prison camp for union soldiers, many died of unsanitary conditions or were shot attempting to swim to freedom. You can go on a guided tour of the slave market and visit the site of Chimborazo Hospital. Further south you can visit Henricus a city of firsts, it was actually the second settlement in VA the first successful one after the failed Jamestown. Pocahontas was kept there and converted to Christianity. Nearby is City Point (today's Hopewell) served as General Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters during the Siege of Petersburg. Then visit Petersburg and the site of the Battle of the Crater where Union forces were halted. Dine on Cary Street in Richmond, visiting quaint shops there. In Richmond you can visit the White House of the Confederacy and then complete an all things Lincoln tour and take in a show at Fords Theater in D.C.

Of the four holiday destinations, what destination most tempts you? I suppose a visit to The States, um... is South Jersey far enough south for ya Hugh?

What holiday/vacations have you had or got planned this year? Not a single one, but I do expect to make a return trip to Wales at some point or another. I'd love to see Niagara Falls again one day, it's just about my favorite spot on the planet, not that I've actually seen much of the planet.

Whatever you do, do enjoy yourself and safe travels... x
South Jersey is definitely south enough for me, but I've got this strange urge of going really south into redneck territory. I know I'll be very disappointed, just as it's very disappointing going into Brexit territory here!

I know New Orleans is hyped up but I didn't find it very enjoyable and somehow I missed getting beignets at Cafe Du Monde, probably due to the crowd. My most vivid memory of the place was how loud and crowded it was and how much it reeked of garbage and sewage, made much worse by the heat of summer. One visit there was more than enough for a lifetime. Our hotel actually passed out maps, drawing a line down the middle of one street, we were warned not to venture there and not even to walk on that side of the street. Nope, not interested in seeing it again. I think Hugh should skip that, maybe it's different now though, dunno.
Yesterday I had a conversation about New Orleans and they said the scars of Hurricane Katrina are still there for all to see. Shame on you George W Bush!

I'm presuming a fiscal crisis in Puerto Rico means your dollar goes farther but if there's disorder and riots following that crisis I can fully understand why you're not going now. I'm just guessing and probably guessing wrong!

Parts of the orinal Route 66 have gone; you now have to drive along a dual carriageway or a motorway or whatever Americans call it to do Route 66 now.

India has always been a fascinating place for me - some friends who have been there hate it and some love it. I think it may be a country of extremes - poverty and luxury!
