THE FASTEST MILKMAN IN THE WEST

THE FASTEST MILKMAN IN THE WEST

I never liked Benny Hill even when chased by a posse of beautiful women; he was well behind the times during his times! In this dodgy era of the 1970s, I much preferred Dick Emery - "Ooh you are awful, but I like you"!

Benny Hill’s 1971 hit song Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West) was terrible even if a little catchy. The public school-educated David Cameron, the UK’s former Prime Minister, claimed on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs that Benny Hill’s song was the only song he remembered the words of. Populism at its best!

Not only did I like Benny Hill, I don’t like milk. Despite, and maybe because of, being a of a dairy farmer, I never enjoyed drinking milk. The smell and taste of milk is just vile.

Until the 1980s, dairy farmers were paid more for their milk if it was creamy. My dad would do cream raids from his milk tank hoping that the local dairy’s testers wouldn’t visit on the day he did a cream raid. Now dairy farmers are paid more for milk with low cream content.

And now dairy farmers are hardly paid the amount it costs to produce milk because supermarkets demand cheap milk. It’s difficult for farmers to negotiate with supermarkets over the price of their products - farmers aren’t collectively organised economically unlike supermarkets.

My brother, who took over my Dad’s dairy farm, now sells his milk to a nearby Müller yogurt factory because he gets paid slightly over the market price for agreeing to supply milk on a long-term basis.

Though I don’t like milk, I love coffee and I prefer coffee with milk. So I do drink milk, usually semi-skimmed because I’m a fat person wanting to come out! At home I make my coffee with milk whitener, Coffee-Mate, which probably has nothing to do with real milk!

Did you like Benny Hill?
Do you like milk?

Andrew Ward has just written a book, No Milk Today, about the history of the milkman. In one chapter, he wrote about the notes people leave for their milkman. One note read, "Leave two pints today - please ring if note blows away". Another note to the milkman read, "Please do not leave milk at No 14 as he dead until further notice"!

Yes, but not together. Benny Hill is more like bathtub gin than Kahlua.

My younger brother liked Benny Hill, I found his humor too juvenile.

I remember milkmen. I like milk - preferably chocolate (and no, that's not a sexual declaration though I like that 'milk' too)

My first memories of Benny Hill were not being allowed to watch it, because it was too dirty. I did not understand this. It was on PBS. PBS wouldn't show anything dirty, right?

Maybe I was just too young for the humor, but I didn't really get it even when I did watch it. .. When I was older, I got it but didn't really think it was all that funny.

Being lactose intolerant, I have a sketchy relationship with milk.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

My mother watched Benny Hill religiously. I did not like his show.
I much preferred "Monty Python's Flying Circus" and "Dr. Who".

I would say I liked some parts of Benny Hill at times.

I don't like drinking milk but on the rare occasion that I eat cereal if I don't eat it dry I might have it in a bowl with milk.

"No Milk to day " par Herman's Hermits est la chanson préféré de ma jeunesse
Benny Hill, j'aimais assez surtout quand son pauvre petit souffre douleur chauve prenait des tapes sur la tête
Je ne bois plus de lait aujourd'hui, mais il y a une époque où j'avais de terrible brûlure d'estomac, grâce aux litres de lait que j'ai bu maintenant je suis guéris

"No Milk to day" by Herman's Hermits is the favorite song of my youth
Benny Hill, I liked enough especially when his poor little suffer bald pain took pats on his head
I do not drink milk today, but there was a time when I had terrible heartburn, thanks to the liters of milk I drank now I am healed

As for Benny Hill I only saw it a few times- I am not too sure I got his juvenile humor. Now give me Mrs. Brown episodes that involved all sorts of ribald nukes
Where I grew up the milk was delivered via the back alley that ran parallel to the street between the houses. By your back door there was a small door that opened into a box that had a door on the inside of the house.Voila- the milk box. He left the new milk and took the old rinsed empties and mom never had to get out of bed to answer the door. I loved it when the cream froze and pushed the paper stopper up about 2 inches. So did the cat

Our dairy farmers have had "it bad" for years and have had to form coalitions to survive. And yes, I like milk and always have.

when I first moved to England and saw Mr. Hill, I thought everyone was nuts. not only was he not funny but he was stupid and annoying. and yet, everyone was laughing. I took it to be an "English" thing.

I eventually found others who loathed him. it was comforting to find out I was not the only one. Monty Python helped knock him to the side and reveal the haters...grins.

and milk is something tht goes on stuff but to just drink it for drinking it.....blech.

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

Benny Hill was on the third channel on Sunday night in France and I remember this simple and dynamic music. That seems so far away!
I love milk when it became cheese.

I wasn't very fond of Dick Emery or Benny Hill. I preferred the likes of Dave Allen and the Goons.

I don't like milk either....I take skimmed milk in my coffee. I do however still have a milkman.

I did like Benny Hill...at the time. It's dated now though.
I don't like drinking milk on the whole. Pasteurized is best.

Did you like Benny Hill? When I just moved to an English speaking country, Benny Hill's show was one of those shows on TV when you didn't have to understand words and had a good laugh at the antics. It wasn't educational by any means but served well as a reason to laugh at the end of a hard day.

Do you like milk? Yes, I love milk and always have. Chocolate milk is still one of my guilty pleasures.

I found Benny Hill annoying, even when I was a kid. Back then it was just his show, now cheap humor is the norm.

Although I have a mild intolerance, I like milk a lot. When I treat myself to some I choose unhomogenized goat or buffalo milk. I prefer unpasteurized but that is harder to procure, where I live.

Milk depends on the quality of animal feed. If you've tasted the milk of a single animal for an extended period of time you can discern where it's been grazing, bitter or sweet grass and depending on the season. Unfortunately most commercial milk is produced to bland specifications. And overwhelmingly the animals are force fed stuff which they are not intended by their physiology to consume.

Benny Hill wasn't dirty, he was just suggestive. But how times change!
