THE UPS AND DOWNS OF THE YEAR     On this New Year’s Eve, I made a list of my ups and downs this year. Below are my three ups and downs of the year as it comes to an end. The Accord de Paris is a United Nations agreement designed to combat climate change. It was signed by nearly every country in the world a year ago - see my GOOD COP, BAD COP post. Last month the agreement, having been ratified by a sufficient number of countries, took effect. This is great news as climate change is one of the most pressing issues facing the world today, though President-Elect Trump has threatened to pull America out of the Paris agreement as he regards climate change as little more than "a hoax"! Another up this year was the very recent peace deal to end the six year-long civil war in Syria. The deal was brokered by Russia and Turkey, with America and the rest of the West on the sidelines. Though the murderous Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, is likely to remain in power, at least the killing and the mass displacement of people are likely to abate - see my WORLD REFUGEE DAY post. My final and unexpected up this year is the rise of Leeds United, my football team - see my CLARKE ONENIL post. Leeds United have been out of England’s top league for well over a decade but, as things stand, they are sitting pretty to return to the top division where they rightly belong! But as any sports fan knows, it’s the hope that kills. My football team is owned by a crazy and crooked Italian, Massimo Cellino. Having bought the club in 2014 he has gone through seven managers but Garry Monk, the current manager, is doing a great job this season so far. My biggest down is Brexit - see my A UNITED KINGDOM post. On 23 June British people voted to leave the European Union. The referendum campaign was acrimonious, bitter and divisive. I’ve always been a committed Europhile and was utterly dismayed as many largely economically illiterate and politically suspect Brexiteers conned the British people to vote to leave the European Union. It’ll take a good decade to sort out this mess, and the choice seems to be how much of a mess we’ll inflict on ourselves. I cannot see one upside to Brexit! Another major down was the election of Donald Trump as American President - see my TRUMPIN HELL, WOULD YOU HAVE SEX WITH DONALD TRUMP and FROM HOPE TO GROPE posts. Even if he only does half what he promises, the world will take a nasty turn as a result of the very dark forces unleashed by a Trump administration. My final down is the death of David Bowie earlier this year. His death very much reminded me of my own inevitable mortality, confirmed by George Michael’s recent death (and his Last Christmas!). I now realise that it’s my generation dying! David Bowie once sang, "We can be heroes, just for one day" - see my DAVID BOWIE, ASHES TO ASHES post. What have been your ups and downs this year? How will you celebrate or, if reading this after today, how did you celebrate New Year’s Eve? I was going to make my girlfriend a nice meal for New Year’s Eve but I think my initial thoughts were far too ambitious as I can’t cook nice meals! Instead of inflicting my cooking on her, I’m taking her to a nearby Belgian restaurant. Whether I stay awake long enough to see the New Year in is another matter! I don't know if I could say happy new year that would mean I have a positive attitude about the up coming year. and like you said.. we have the Dark Lord that has been elected but the dark minions of our society. they think you just put shit in to make things different.. and things will be different.. but they don t consider the out come. cause.. we Americans are stupid.. we poll that we hate our congress , the polls show they' re at 20% or less.. but when it comes to elections , they vote the same people into office again.. so why is that.. cause they think there guy is the best.. and the rest are bad.. well, that catches on.. and everyone does that , and we have a shity congress year after year after year.. so I just say.. I hope everyone that I know has a happy and healthy day. and hope that the next day is better than the last.. best I can do.. my friend! face piles of trials with smiles.. Cette année à vu beaucoup de décés, mais je peux prédire que l'an prochain aussi Avant de critiquer les anglais et les amércains, j'attendrais de savoir qui va être élu comme président de la république française en mai 2017 Les années de rêves de notre jeunesse sont devenues les années de plombs de notre " vieillesse" Mais après tout se sont les années de rêves de ceux qui sont jeunes aujourd'hui Malgré tout je rêve toujours de jours meilleurs et des lendemains qui chantent A demain pour mes voeux, car superstition oblige ♥ Poton ♥ Bisou ♥ Annie ♥ Hello Spunky Your top is very good, but I do not think the climate agreements have arrived on time Peace in Syria ??? This year saw a lot of deaths, but I can predict that next year too Before criticizing the English and the Americans, I would wait to know who will be elected president of the French Republic in May 2017 The years of dreams of our youth have become the lead years of our "old age" But after all this are the dreams of those who are young today Despite everything I always dream of better days and tomorrows that sing Tomorrow for my wishes, for superstition obliges ♥ Kiss ♥ Annie ♥

I had ups and downs every day.......I get up and I lay down I will be spending a quiet evening at home like I have for the past 31 years. I will be putting out snacking food though. "HAPPY NEW YEAR" spunky!

I agree that the Paris Accords are a good thing. .. They are only a start, and Donald Trump will be nothing more than a hiccup in the long run. I am still concerned about Syria. Maybe more than ever. Where were those buses going? .. And look how he is still treating his citizens.  YAY for your football team! When it comes to the downs, Trump comes to mind before Brexit; but that is just me on my side of the pond. .. I have serious doubts about his ability to implement almost anything. He will still screw things up. .. He already has.  And that list of lost celebrities is really long this year.  2017, Here we come!

Personally the loss of a grandchild was a down....losing 4 and a half stone in weight was an up....I agree with yours with the exception of Leeds.....I'm a ManU supporter and we have finished the year on a good note.  ~~Anais Nin~~

What have been your ups and downs this year? The biggest up, was the birth of a new baby in the extended family. The downs were the deaths of several friends How will you celebrate or, if reading this after today, how did you celebrate New Year’s Eve? Had a very early celebration dinner with friends and family. Got home, did some reading and off to bed before 11pm. I watched the ball falling this morning on the news

My best wishes, Spunky for this new year. I hope the peace-deal in Syria will be efficient, but i doubt. I hope France will have a great Président(e), but i doubt. I hope i will have a joyful life, this i can do, so i will try. I was, last night, with some friends, we ate, drank, danced, sang and then we kissed around midnight, it was joyful, erotic and tiring. Happy New Year.........please let it be so. i am a pragmatic optimist....i know, i know. so while i work at solutions, i keep hoping the work will someday get easier. this next year, is looking a bit grim but i'm praying for miracles.......grins fingers crossed my friend You cannot conceive the many without the one.

Happy New Year, Spunky. What have been your ups and downs this year? The Cubs lost and then won it all in the World Series. The University of Michigan Wolverines won everything and then lost everything. Both were a hell of a lot of fun. How will you celebrate or, if reading this after today, how did you celebrate New Year’s Eve? I drank rum and watched Ken Burns' baseball series on TV. And went to bed just past midnight. I have so many ups and downs. almost daily sometimes. but nothing major as far as downs. the only one that comes to mind is working way too much this year. but there is an up to that because it means I make more money. so all in all, it seems to even out pretty well.
