HALLOWEEN IS CENSORED

I don’t do Halloween!

Do you do Halloween?

In the last two weeks I’ve had two of my blog posts taken down by the site. I managed to get one reinstated but I’m still battling to get the other one reinstated. My apologies for not replying to your comments to this now censored blog post, titled STOP PRESS: ANOTHER SECURITY BREACH ON THIS SITE.

The censored post was about the latest security breach affecting this site, now admitted by the site.

Inside is the exchange of mails between me and the site about the issue. I’m still awaiting a reply to my question why a censored blog post that didn’t breach the site’s Terms of Use was taken down.

It’s so frustrating because the site’s Customer Service Department rarely answers questions. I’d respect the site more if it just said they took my post down because it was critical of the site rather than the corporate guff they give out.

I realise this issue isn’t that important in the wider scheme of things, but censorship, whether state or corporate censorship, affects us all. Being free to think, say and act lies at the heart of any fair, free and democratic society.

Can I just say that this site provides a wonderful way for members to communicate with people they would not otherwise communicate with.

But can I just say that this site has got it well wrong how it censors what is posted in blogland. Sorry that was a typo, what I really meant was this site has got it well right how it censors what is posted in blogland. And sorry I forgot to add that this was posted in 2016 and not 1984!

Have you ever been banned by the site?
If so, what was your badge of honour that got you banned?

This may be my last post before I’m banned.

STOP PRESS. The site has just mailed me that my censored post will not be reinstated as it breached the site's terms of use, precisely what terms I breached they did not tell me!

Isn't it strange how the site can send repeated mail reminding its members to vote in its latest Halloween contest but send no mail alerting its members to a security breach?!

My apologies to all for not being able to reply to comments to my censored blog post.

From me:

On Wednesday, 19 October I posted a blog titled, STOP PRESS: ANOTHER SECURITY BREACH ON THIS SITE.
The post was initially accepted and attracted many views and comments.
On Friday, the blog post had disappeared from my blog home page.
After doing a search, I found the blog post. I could either edit or delete the post. I chose to edit the post but the post just vanished.
On Friday, I sent Affairlook a mail asking why this blog post was deleted, but as of yet I haven't received a reply despite being a long-standing gold member where Affairlook promises to reply within 24 hours.
Today, Sunday, I did another search. The search found the phrase, 'Member Deleted Post'. I did not; the site deleted the post.
Please can you tell me why this blog post was taken down? As far as I'm aware, didn't breach any of the site's terms of use.
The post reported news, widely available on the Internet, that there is a security breach on the site. I reported the news verbatim for other members to see.
I'd be grateful if you can you put the blog post up with comments? I cannot do this from my end.
This incident gives the appearance of the site censoring any critical coverage of its data security arrangements.
It gives the impression that the site's policy in dealing with data security issues is not primarily concerned to fix the problems and inform its members at the earliest opportunity of such problems so they can take any necessary action but, moreover, to stifle any critical attention.
I hope all this is just a misunderstanding or a technical glitch. I hope that my blog post, plus comments, can be resurrected as soon as possible. But also, I hope you reply in a constructive and meaningful way to this mail.

From me:

I often wonder about the site in general.
I don't think they have enough people who are working in this section of the site, customer service, because if they did, people would get prompter replies to glitches.

I sincerely hope that they reinstate, or reproduce your post with all the comments intact. Why am I not holding my breath on that?

In French, the posts are very often censored for incomprehensible reasons. The bots that control posts do not understand French. Just change a character so the post is then accepted.
No doubt it is not profitable to set up automatic censors in French.

Have you ever been banned by the site?
Not entirely, but many of my posts were denied or deleted by site for mentioning security breach. My guess is that software they use includes phrase "security breach" as forbidden and therefore censors posts with this phrase.
I also had a few innocent posts that didn't have any forbidden words/phrases denied, some vanished to later appear in my blog with a message "Member deleted post". For that I have no answer except stupidity, bad luck or another technical mishap.

I read your post that vanished and commented there. It was a great, powerful and informative post that everyone should have read. This site is known for dealing with security issues that affect members in a way that only infuriates all of us. Instead of protecting members, site tries to shut us up.

Hope, your post is reinstated with all comments. Some were really good and just.

Best of luck!

I'm not sure if I'm doing Halloween this year...as it's on a Monday and the kids have school next day (not my kids by the way!)

You expecting a reasonable answer from this site, might be just as crazy as Good Ole Charlies Brown awaiting the Great Pumpkin. (Not sure if you'll understand that reference, but US residents surely will.)

Bonjour Spunky

Hello Spunky
As the saying Effer2910 in France there are often bugs, but most of the time just change a comma and the post is no longer censored, but I've never had a post that disappeared. I hope you find it

Yes I have been banned from the site...twice actually!!!

This was in the so called good old days....once when I used a blogger's handle without permission and the second time when I left a URL in an image. Both of these breaches of the TOU seem to be totally ignored these days.....but I will never repeat either!!!

I wish you well in your correspondence with the site....it's like banging your head against a brick wall....they are alien robots at the other end.

Have you ever been banned by the site? No, but I'm sure there are people who wish I were.

FWIW, I doubt customer "service" (the level 1 folks at least) are the ones to deal with. The Site Support guys are a higher level of service and are not as scripted as level 1.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

I haven't been banned, but I have had posts denied. Sometimes even after comments had been made on them. .. Bashing the site can be considered a "banned topic". .. Others were just the bots. Usually changing a word or two will get it approved.

Halloween is a holiday with mysterious origins. .. I'm ok with it. It is usually a lot of fun, but I just don't get excited about any holidays anymore. .. Glad I'm done working nights.

I was banned from this site once. It was a cowardly lie told by the owner of a room that I used to moderate for. He was very offended by my post Just sharing . I still have it active and am proud to say he "fucked" with the wrong guy

I've never been banned (I try to fly far under the radar) but years ago, I got reported a few times for stuff that was quickly cleared up. Like others, I've had several posts banned. I've either used a forbidden word or a topic, usually related to the site, that seemed to trigger a disappearance.

I can tell right off the bat why you got that off topic response. I believe them when they say the only maintain a small customer service area. Since most of the email coming in will ask if there really was a breach, the system scans the emails for key words and then auto generates a reply email.

it's a numbers game, probably some 80 or 90-odd% of the emails with those key phrases will be answered by that auto response. They figure the other people will either write back or drop the issue.

Not that I've ever worked for any big companies that would do something like that....

Have you ever been banned by the site?
NO, I haven't yet had that honor.

I thought your banned post was a good one. You didn't single out the site for any particular negligence. It simply emphasized that no website is immune these days, which ought to be obvious by now- there is really no such thing as secure digital data. IF you were to be banned that would be a grievous loss to the site and especially to me personally. I consider you to be a model blogging citizen and an asset not only to your friends but to the site as a whole.

It is a badge of honour!

In fact I'd say that anyone who is fairly active on the blogs and hasn't fallen foul of royalty is bland at best and at worst a suck-up

Customer Services sent me an email saying I'd been banned, but if I said I wouldn't do it again they'd let me back. When I asked what I'd done they told me they weren't allowed to say...

So I said I wouldn't do it again and the let me back

They frequently remove comments I've left on the Site Support blog - not because I've been offensive, just because they didn't want what I said to be public...

The site refused to reinstate my post because they said it breached their terms of use but they refused to say how it did. It's an Orwellian nightmare writ small here!

I can well imagine French and other non-English-speaking bloggers having more of a hard time in getting their blog posts passed through their very crude censoring software.

The site still hasn't told us about the latest security breach and probably won't now.
Their actions or rather non-actions just go against the advice on how companies should deal with such problems.
