ART FOR DOG’S SAKE

The world’s first art exhibition for dogs took place in the Ugly Duck Gallery in London last month. The exhibition was organised by the British artist Dominic Wilcox.

The artwork was primarily in blue and yellow, colours that dogs can see, and was also scented, especially by meat. All the paintings were hung at dog-eye level, just the right height for a to cock his leg!

There was one collage of mail coming through a letter-box for dogs to get excited about. There was also one art installation that simulated a flying Frisbee to captivate dogs.

Plus there was a 12-foot bowl full of over 2,000 balls which dogs could jump in and out of. And there was also a moving car in which dogs could hang their heads out of the window to smell the many scents in the air. In the corner of the gallery there were four bowl-fountains that dogs could splash around with.

Would you take a pet to this art exhibition?
Do you think dogs appreciate art?

At first I thought the idea of this exhibition was crazy, but having seen the artwork I think it’s quite inspiring. If I had a pet dog, I’d take it for a long walk to the art gallery. But I think taking a pet cat would make the exhibition more interesting!

What in Heaven's name will people think of next?

No I wouldn't take a dog to an exhibition like that....the only dogs I know aren't well enough behaved.

Hello Spunky
I do not see a single tree or lamppost or fire hydrant

C'mon! We all know what the dogs are thinking ...... "I don't know much about art but I know what I like!"

That's unique, that's for sure. We just had an entire summer of MEOW in the Worcester art museum from a different perspective. Those of us who love cats were invited to exhibit art work for about 9 weeks and people who visited the museum could view it as one of the exhibitions. There were oil paintings, quilts, collages, photographs, watercolor, any medium you can think of. The youngest exhibitor was 4 years old and did. a collage of cat pics from magazines. The last month of the show there was a cat room- a huge floor to ceiling net tent with toys and hidey-holes and cats from the local animal shelter were in there. YoOu could go in the net and touch them Many of the kitties got adopted!!! The entry fee $10 per piece exhibited and the proceeds went to the shelter Yep Cats are the art lovers

Well, my dogs would like sniffing the other dogs....

Do you think dogs appreciate art?
Honestly, my dogs are working class dogs. They appreciate a pile of raccoon shit, a dead possum that's been marinating in the sun on the edge of the road for a few days, rabbits, rabbit fur, rabbit poop (anything rabbit), and tacos. Oh, and pizza. Both my dogs love pizza.

All of my dogs lived with an artist for most of their lives. Never had any dog exhibited any interest in artworks. Was it artist's fault or was it because they were Newfies, the working dogs? I have no answer.... But, I find it hysterical that dog owners are so dumb to assume that a dog had any appreciation for art. Of course, every dog owner thinks his/her dog is a genius exception!

Let me guess... this was actually a study of just how stupid people really are... or was it an exhibition of just how stupid people really are...

They had a pool day for dogs here last week. The dogs got to play in a public pool. Seems to be something popular. I'm sure the people cleaning the pools like it so much...

I don't think dogs see in color.....so no I don't think dogs appreciate art. But, if the art had a smell attached....then the dogs would go for that!

I think it's the smells that made dogs enjoy this gallery! I'm not sure other species have done art, maybe birds of paradise!

I think there has to be free dog food - at least Pedigree Chum - for dogs to fully enjoy this art gallery. I hope you like Pedigree Chum; I do!

The dogs do seem well behaved at this art gallery, but that's the photographer's prerogative!

You are right, real art for dogs would have a tree, a lamppost and a fire hydrant, but perhaps the art gallery has a special toilets for dogs!

Cats, I'm sure, have a much finer appreciation of art than dogs!
