BAN THE BURKINI!

BAN THE BURKINI!

In France there's a big move towards banning the wearing of the burkini on beaches. On one beach in Nice, a burkini-wearing woman was recently forced to remove clothing to comply with the burkini ban.

A burka is an outer garment worn by some Muslim women to cover their bodies when in public. Many Islamic scholars believe that the Qur'an requires men and women to dress modestly when in public.

In France, it is against the law for the burka to be worn in schools. There are increasing calls for the wearing of the burka to be banned in other places, such as beaches and universities. Next year there are presidential elections in France, so presidential candidates-in-waiting are queuing up to attack the burka and its sister burkini.

Do you think the wearing of the burkini should be banned on beaches?
Do you think the wearing of the burka should be banned in public places?

I’m a liberal so I have no problem people wearing what they want to wear. If a woman wants to wear a burka or a burkini, then so be it. And if a man wants to wear a burka or a burkini, then so be it. There is no harm done to others by someone wearing such attire.

Also if John Simpson can get away wearing a burka while singlehandedly liberating Kabul and if Nigella Lawson can get away with wearing a burkini-looking outfit while swimming in the sea, then every person should have the choice to wear such attire. But, I forgot, they’re both not Muslims!

I'd love to leave a simple comment about a complex issue.

Forcing that woman to disrobe in public was humiliating and wrong.
(I'm glad that ban got struck down by a judge.)

Freedom? .. Free to wear what you want? .. Not when it becomes an issue of public safety, like it has in France.

I'm an atheist, and am all for people believing what they want; but I have issues with any religion that imposes such strict requirements on its followers. I don't see that as being "free". .. But if someone wants to bath in the sun on a beach wearing flannels and a trench-coat, more power to them.

OK, this is just kind of dumb.
We have lots of women around San Diego who cover up when they go in the water or are on the beach, and yes, they almost cover up this much! We get so much sun in San Diego, that covering up on the beach is protective and keeps us from wrinkling all over our bodies. Of course, being in the surf community, wet suits cover just as much, except for the neck.

Ah, but we don't do it for religious purposes and you still might see us in our bikinis for a few minutes while changing from the wet suit to our cover ups.

It's discrimination, so, yes, women should be allowed to wear burkinis on the beach.

Reading about this issue last week - I don't recall what site it was - a woman who makes burkinis said that many skin cancer patients order burkinis from her so they can enjoy the beach in safety.

You all get me with your "click bait" titles...you know that, right?

I mean, I have "pretty shiny" disease (ADD), I go where my mind takes me

I think women, as well as men, should have a choice to wear what they wish. If it makes them comfortable, cool.

Did I hear where their reasoning was that explosives could be hidden under all that clothing? That is a though!

The ban is part of growing ultra conservative nationalism being seen growing throughout Europe. to me it is a very concerning movement that simply limits peoples rights due to their religious beliefs and fear caused by a lack of understanding of those beliefs.

A lot of confusion with this story.
The "State Council", an instance who examine the mayors' decisions say that the burkini can't be banished, this is not constitutional.
Some populists politicians speak a lot about that, a lot of rumors before the presidential election.
An old law prohibit every clothing which mask the face on public area, like burka.
In France, tempers flare because of attacks and elections as in the united kingdom before the referendum or in the United States because of the elections . The times are not for moderation and tolerance, unfortunately.

Bonjour Spunky

Hello Spunky
Yes France is difficult to understand when one is not French
And Occitania is difficult to understand when one is not Occitan
In Occitania religious persecution date back to dawn of times and everyone was careful that it does not start again, even restrict some freedom ostentatious

Not only do they look ridiculous, but there are public safety concerns with a lot of these non-conforming misfits who seem to think that they are entitled to special treatment.

I agree that they look ridiculous. One day someone is going to drown wearing it. They say Muslim women cover up to prevent Muslim men from getting lustful thoughts. I guess their faith is not strong enough to resist such temptations.

Do you think the wearing of the burkini should be banned on beaches? Well I think all women should be banned from wearing clothes on the beach...excusssse me, that was my friend speaking, he has a dirty mind and just blurts things out sometimes. I think anyone should be able to wear whatever they want to at the beach as long as it isn't a grenade belt.
Do you think the wearing of the burka should be banned in public places? No. If your country says it has religious freedom then it is wrong to limit some religions but not others.

Oh, the contradictions.
But we know this isn't really about the attire is it?

It doesn't bother me what people wear so long as they don't pressurise me into joining them.

If someone's religion says they must dress modestly we who don't live under similar dictates should respect them.

Do you think the wearing of the burkini should be banned on beaches? No way. I thought it was pretty stupid by the government to tell that lady to take her cloths off .. I can see why they did it because of possible attack but come one. Really..
Do you think the wearing of the burka should be banned in public places? I think they have a right to wear them any where. Even our RCMP(Police Force) is now allowing women to wear them in uniform. hugssssss v

I couldn't care less on both counts. As long as I'm not forced to wear burka in public, I'm good.
If a country has a law that no one can cover their face for security reasons, everyone has to comply . If not natives to said country don't agree, they shouldn't stay in that country.
No one should argue existing laws and customs in a home where they're guests.

Burkini's shouldn't be banned from beaches. Mankini's should be

If the woman wearing the burkini is doing it voluntarily then good for them, but if they are told to wear it by their men, then it is wrong. I know the far right Muslim sects, force woman to adhere to the strict wearing of the burka or burkini. I believe it should be the woman's choice not the male church leaders.

No.

Do you think the wearing of the burka should be banned in public places?
No. Like you, I think people should be able to wear what they want. I don't believe the safety argument either. There are plenty of other kinds of clothing that might conceal weapons or a bomb. Why not ban all clothing, then?

Your take on this is brilliant. Complex issues will invoke complex responses. One issue here, I think, is that there's no evidence yet of a man forcing his partner to wear a burkini. And that's why it's wrong she was forced to strip!

Your analogy with wet suits is well taken here. I think it's whether women want to wear a burkini or whether it's men or culture doing it. No one will really know. Free choice is a chirade!
