IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT

"It was a dark and stormy night" is a classic line often written by Snoopy in the brilliant Peanuts cartoons. The line is taken from Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s novel Paul Clifford published in 1830.

As well as being a politician, Edward Bulwer-Lytton wrote many bestselling novels and coined the phrases "the great unwashed", "pursuit of the almighty dollar" and "the pen is mightier than the sword". His surname is given to the annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest in which contestants, once upon a time, enter the worst opening lines for imaginary novels!

Since 1993, the Literary Review magazine organises an annual Bad Sex in Fiction Award. In 2010, Tony Blair’s autobiography, A Journey, was nominated for this award. The former Prime Minister was nominated for a cringeworthy passage about the night spent with his wife Cherie following the news of the Labour leader John Smith's sudden death:
"That night she cradled me in her arms and soothed me; told me what I needed to be told; strengthened me. On that night of 12 May 1994, I needed that love Cherie gave me, selfishly. I devoured it to give me strength. I was an animal following my instinct".

I’ve really got off track with this post. I started writing this post wanting to chart the rise of computer-written books. Professor Hitoshi Matsubari, a computer scientist, used an artificial intelligence programme to write the novel, The Day a Computer Writes a Novel, which was shortlisted for a literary award in Japan.

The novel’s two opening lines are: "The day a computer wrote a novel. The computer, placing priority on the pursuit of its own joy, stopped working for humans." In my opinion, that’s a good opening for a novel!

Do you think the pen is mightier than the sword?
Have you ever written or at least started to write a novel?
Would you read a book written by a computer?

I started writing a novel in my teens. It was called The Point but I never got beyond the first few pages. Alas I’m a failed author, a good starter but a bad finisher!

My instincts tell me that I wouldn’t enjoy reading a book written by a computer. I would feel duped as it removes a crucial relationship between the author and the reader, which is always important in reading a book. But then again I'm a Luddite!

The pen is defintely mightier than the sword. Ideas matter!

Firstly...Blair is an idiot and his wife is not much better!!!

I agree that the pen is just about the mightiest instrument in the world. The effects of the written word can last forever.

I have started to write.....too many times and the only thing I can write about is my life....and there are parts which will be better never said.

I'm not sure about a book written by a computer....why not?....heck I even read the back of cereal packets!.

I started writing a novel on a typewriter once. I was probably about 15, maybe younger. It was about a group of teenagers and a 1976 midnight blue Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. I'm sure it was mostly made up of my own fantasies and dreams at the time. I don't remember if it had a title. I wouldn't doubt it it would have read like it was inspired by SE Hinton. ... The only other person who read it was my mom and she said it had value, but of course she would. (Actually I'm sure she would have been honest enough to tell me if she thought it was total crap.)

I have read about artificial intelligence writing novels. I am intrigued by what AI can do. .. I wasn't aware that a computer had actually written one. That opening line is good, but also frightening in a way. .. It implies that the computer has emotions and free will.

I would read a novel written by a computer, as long as I had the time and attention span. .. AI really brings in some crazy benefits. Like it could write a novel customized to entertain an individual. .. How much would the computer be paid?

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

Do you think the pen is mightier than the sword? It can definitely be in our current times but it wasn't that long ago that the sword was the power base for the decision maker/enforcer.
Have you ever written or at least started to write a novel? Nope.
Would you read a book written by a computer? Yes, if I found it interesting enough.

Bonjour Spunky
Le stylo plus fort que le fusil, très philosophique, mais j'ai comme un doûte .
Un livre écrit par un ordinateur , pour un fan de S.F. , pourquoi pas

Hello Spunky
The pen stronger than the gun, very philosophical, but I have such a doubt.
A book written by a computer, for a fan of S. F., why not

I don't think I could read a computer generated novel, I need the passion of the author to come through in their words

I'm with Naughty on this one. And then too, I'd rather be threatened with words than a sword.

Have you ever written or at least started to write a novel?
Yes.

The pen is mightier than the sword, especially if its tip is hardened steel and if the ink is vitriol!
Of course that ideas are more powerful than weapons, long term.
In any case, I want to believe it.
I want to read a book writing by a computer, to see what it is, probably it is better than my own novels but can a computer write poems?

At least the writing on the back of cereal boxes is written by humans; software-authored books just seem an attack on humanity. But I can't stop this tide!

I guess a computer-written book is still written by a human, the programmer.

"Alas I’m a ... good starter and a bad finisher!" That is very disappointing news Hugh! I had such high hopes for you Hugh!
If I'm a very good starter and a slightly bad finisher, have I redeemed myself?!

Would you read a book written by a computer?
Today, any book or novel written by a computer would be a rough draft at best!
It seems starting but not finisjing a novel is what most people do; perhaps people need to start with the end of the novel they're writing!

A person wielding a sword can always kill a person holding a pen, but ideas transcend death. The Nazis burnt books but they couldn't kill the ideas in the books.
