I HATE DEADLINES    It seems everyone asking someone to do something has to set a deadline or anyone wanting something has to do it by a given deadline. Deadlines are rarely negotiated; they’re imposed by the powerful onto the powerless. Deadlines are the bane of my life and the scourge of my work. I can handle no more than one deadline a day. I’m a man and so I can only do one thing at a time! Most of my work time is spent meeting deadlines set by others for their convenience. I distinguish between hard deadlines, ones that have to be met, and soft deadlines, ones that don’t have to be met. But I’ve noticed I face more deadlines, and more hard deadlines, than when I first started working. And I’ve noticed I hardly set any deadlines for others to meet. I must admit I start something only when I can sense a deadline looming, so perhaps I need a deadline. I do procrastinate a lot without deadlines! My last deadline was to write a report and my next deadline is to write another report. Generally I’m not good with deadlines because deadlines aren’t good to me! Are you good at meeting deadlines? What was your last deadline and what is your next deadline? The word 'deadline' first appeared during the American Civil War. On 10 May 1864 the inspector of the Confederate reported on the terrible conditions of the Andersonville Prison and wrote: "On the inside of the stockade and twenty feet from it there is a dead-line established, over which no prisoner is allowed to go, day or night, under penalty of being shot." In the early nineteenth century, the word 'deadline' was used in the printing industry; it was a line beyond which printers should not type. Since the 1920s, the word is increasingly used to refer to time limits.    |

I do not like deadlines. In my work, I have to respect many deadlines, like you, some are justified and I shall gladly bends, others are done for others amenities. These, I noticed that I could free myself and I do not deprive myself. For me, the holiday is when I have no agenda, I do a lot of things but I am depending on my mood. Having had professional activities where often it was not possible to meet all the deadlines and so they were often postponed, I learned to judge the appropriateness of deadlines and not to feel guilty when I could not stand those which were not worth the trouble. Deadlines are like mails, too much deadlines lost the sense of what is important from what is anecdotal. The fun is important, everything else is secondary. I can generally deal with deadlines, but lately it seems like management feels that they can move up the due dates at will. I’ve found that planning to beat the deadline (and not telling management about it) works better for me… I like to have the job done and sitting on the shelf. If you let them know that you’re done early, they’ll come to expect it.

I'm pretty good with deadlines....During my working life my job revolved around deadlines....mostly set by the Revenue and there were huge penalties for not meeting them. My last deadline was getting to my daughter's house in time for her to get to work....and it will be the same again tomorrow.....I hate getting up early in the morning.  ~~Anais Nin~~

They weren't paper deadlines- I had to move freight with an express common carrier who advertised ninety eight per cent on time next day service. My whole day was one deadline after another, rain or shine, sleet or snow. It was hectic and high pressure, but that's what paid the bills. And i sort of liked it, and took pride in being good at it. What was your last deadline and what is your next deadline? I set a deadline for my retirement of 31 December 2013, and I made that deadline too! I never looked back. Are you good at meeting deadlines? I don't like them but I suppose I've met them as needed. What was your last deadline and what is your next deadline? I don't have any work related deadlines now. I am in physical therapy AGAIN! I do have to complete my assigned exercises at home before each session, but if I don't I suppose it is only to my detriment. Though I suppose this isn't a true deadline. The same goes for the guitar lessons. The guitar is not as easy as it looks. I can't make a single cord and even single notes are difficult at this point, especially using my ring finger and pinky which are the weakest. I am determined not to give up. My husband has been playing guitar since he was a young child and my daughter taught herself in her teens. If I do have a deadline, it is a motivator because I also procrastinate.

Knowing when something has to be done by is great, but sometimes when someone sets you a deadline you think 'who the fuck are you!'
