But I sometimes wonder whether words also limit our thoughts. I never quite know the extent to which my thoughts are shaped by language. It’s estimated that there are between 5,000 and 7,000 languages in the world, though it’s not easy to distinguish between a language and a dialect. Some scholars think that only humans speak a language; whereas other scholars argue that language can be found in other species, including our predecessors. Some scholars think language is genetically encoded and innate; whereas other scholars think language is socially learnt and cultured. Below is Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s painting, The Tower of Babel, portraying the biblical myth about the origin of different languages. Painted in 1563, the Tower of Babel represents the creationist view of language. I love this painting; it predicts the skyscraper! After the Great Flood, people from everywhere flocked to the land of Shinar. Speaking the same language, they started to build the city of Babel. Threatened by this act of human cooperation and ambition, god confounded these people by making them speak different languages so they were unable to understand each other to complete building this city. God then had these people scattered around the world.  |

I like words too, I really love playing with words. Playing with words is playing with concepts, bend, deform to bring out new. I am convinced that the different languages differently structured thoughts and diversity in languages like genetics is a better guarantee of adapting to change. The science is telling us that the Neanderthals had words, but not as fluent as modern humans are. What would this have been like? How did it influence their culture? Did it contribute to their extinction?

As much as I love words, they often deceive us unless we see facial expressions and body language. And even then it may not be enough to understand the real meaning behind words. All species capable of emotions. Dogs don't need to learn a specific language to understand a command. They can smell emotions, hear intonations and watch body language. In some ways, dogs understand us better than we do ourselves. I can't read this. I am in the wrong frame of mind. I think I nearly have suffered a seizure trying. The thing about words and language is that it is often misunderstood. Wrong words may be used or the words are right but the intention is still not clear. Or the words are the words but the reader has missed the point entirely, such as a kiss-off letter that is initially makes the reader feel wonderful, until with subsequent reads the meaning is understood and then it feels quite awful. You know, a He said VS She heard type of thing. For instance, I just happen to have a portion of such a letter right here. "I want you and want to be with you, but we never can seem to make it work. Maybe it is better that I set you free and not make you sit through the emotional roller coaster that my schedule causes. I don't want to cause pain. I want to be the reason you smile, but I feel in this instance, I am doing nothing but the opposite. I'm sorry that it has to be this way, but I don't want to torture you anymore because things never seem to work in our favor.
