YOGA’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK
YOGA’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK In the last week I’ve come across three articles on yoga. First was an article on Iyengar Yoga, which is supposed to be the most popular form of yoga practiced across the world. Celebrity practitioners include Andi MacDowell, Jennifer Aniston, Joanna Lumley, Madonna and Nigella Lawson. I’ve never heard of this form of yoga; I just thought yoga was yoga! The second article I came across was about a Korean man doing a bit of yoga on a flight from Hawaii to Japan. When the crew asked him to stop his stretches and return to his seat, Hyong-tae Pae went into an unyoga-like rage. He shouted at the crew, threatened to kill other passengers and assaulted those who tried to restrain him. Because of all this commotion, the pilot diverted the plane back to Honolulu. The third article I read was an article on Rage Yoga. According to the Rage Yoga website, it is "a practice involving stretching, positional exercises and bad humor, with the goal of attaining good health and to become zen as f*ck." The pioneer of Rage Yoga is a Canadian woman, Lindsay Istace, who holds regular classes in Calgary. An hour-long class costs $12, which includes one beer! Lindsay Istace said: "Rage Yoga was invented during a painful breakup to help me overcome my addiction and anger issues. Traditional Vinyasa Yoga is all about calmness and stillness, and I didn’t really fit into those classes. So I invented Rage Yoga, which lets you create a space for yourself to be angry, to shout and swear, and drink beer while you’re doing it. And at the end of class, instead of doing the Namaste hands-together gesture, we all give the middle finger, and chant a really big 'fuck yea, fuck yea'." Have you ever practiced yoga? I’ve never done yoga. The closest I’ve come to doing yoga is having butterfly-style sex while watching Yogi Bear on telly! Free yoga classes have been introduced in UK prisons; they are designed for prisoners with a long stretch! |

I took a few yoga classes many years ago and would have continued if the woman had not moved her studio. I lost count of how many different types of yoga are available, but the ones I'm familiar with are hot yoga (room temp is 105 degrees F), yoga for meditation and yoga for balance and strength. I went for the last type. It was easy, calming, accelerated my heart rate and increased my range of motion. Sure wish I could find another one close by.

Yes I have been doing Yoga on and off for a couple of years. Broke my back in a car accident so it helps. Plus strength and flexibility. I can tell when I have not done it for awhile. I enjoy it!

Ah, Spunky, this is brilliant! I've had an on and off love affair with yoga since the seventies. I'd get into a regular routine of practice and then work changes and pressures would distract me from it, and I'd have to start all over again later. I know that when I'm practicing I feel immeasurably better. My stamina and endurance are improved and my outlook improves along with my general feeling of better health. I began with an interest in meditation and that sparked a curiosity about hatha yoga. I'm convinced it was the best thing I ever did for myself. But I always got stuck at the fourth precept which directs us to speak no ill of anyone. Some son-of-a-bitch would say the name "Nixon" and off I'd go like a menstruating divorcee facing foreclosure on the relative merits of her ex. I think Rage Yoga could be just the right fit for me! Fuck yeah! Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

I practised yoga for years until I was in hospital 6 years ago. I still sometimes do some meditation which I find really helpful in keeping stress at bay. Of course so is swearing and letting rip now and then. ~~Anais Nin~~

I've never done yoga. It's certainly good for body flexibility, but I do not know why the meditation side'm bored.
