LET’S GO PANTHERS

Here in the UK the ice hockey season is now over. My team, the Nottingham Panthers, won the play-offs. That’s our equivalent to the NHL’s Stanley Cup though the format is very different. There are no best-of-seven play-off games here.

There are only ten teams in the top league here. The top eight teams go forward to play in four home-and-away quarter-final games. The four quarter-final winners go onto the play-off weekend held in Nottingham to play sudden-death semi-final and final games.

In the semi-final, Nottingham Panthers easily beat Fife Flyers, the oldest ice hockey team in Britain. And in the final they went on to beat Coventry Blaze in a thrilling game.

The standard of ice hockey here is about sub-AHL standard. And the style of ice hockey is more NHL than European; the game is far more physical here than the rest of Europe where the emphasis is on speed and skill. Here we like our enforcers! Cam Janssen is our enforcer - see last photo below; he rarely starts but always finishes a fight.

Ice hockey teams are a mix of Brits and imports, most coming from Canada and America. A few former NHL players end their playing careers here. Panthers’ Cam Janssen, Juraj Kolnik, Brad Moran and Kevin Quick (and he is!) have all played in The Big Show.

Slightly unusually the Nottingham Panthers’ main sponsor is a trade union, the GMB! I like the fact that a trade union, rather than a corporate sponsor, is behind my team. Trade unions have to market themselves too, though I suspect the GMB’s sponsorship, which includes a few free seats for games, may be more down to a senior trade unionist’s love of the Panthers!

Are you an ice hockey fan? If so, what’s your team?
What sports do you like playing or watching?

As well as ice hockey, I enjoy watching football, cycling, tennis, rugby union and athletics. I used to play football, rugby union, (field) hockey, tennis, basketball, badminton, squash and table tennis. I was quite sporty but I don’t play sport anymore save for running to my sofa to watch sport on television.

I do like looking at photos of ice hockey, almost as much as looking at photos of lycra-clad cyclists but I’ll save the cycling photos for July when the Tour de France is on!

Are you an ice hockey fan? If so, what’s your team?
No. We do have a local team, the Kalamazoo Wings, or K Wings. I have a friend, a curvy blonde, who was their mascot, which I thought was hilarious. They called her Slappy, and she didn't care for my jokes about the duties of the mascot. She never really did answer me though.

What sports do you like playing or watching?
I used to be a Major League Baseball fan, but I got turned off by the machinations of the owners. I like watching local ball games better now, and I really enjoy watching women's sports, like the women's softball games. The hype is toned down considerably. I hate the way the media make a spectacle of it. My one concession to big money sports is my devotion to the University of Michigan Wolverines football team.

Are you an ice hockey fan? If so, what’s your team?
I grew up playing hockey until I was 50. Being a netminder, I was getting bruised too much for my job, so I gave it up. We have 2 NHL teams in Alberta....Edmonton Oilers(Gretskey's winningest team) and Calgary Flames. We also have a junior team here...Lethbridge Hurricanes..a WHL junior team! I do like the Toronto Maple Leafs..one of the "original six"!

What sports do you like playing or watching?
I watch most sports except for tennis and basketball. I watch as much Olympics as I can...both summer & winter!

What sports do you like playing or watching? My favorite is NASCAR auto racing

I don't have any favorite teams for any sports and I almost never ever watch any on TV. Exceptions being I did watch the last couple of games in the women's soccer championships last year. Typically if I set down in front of the TV and a game is on I tend to doze off.

I enjoyed playing sports in school gym class and after school when us kids got together and played. We used to play softball or baseball at our family reunions but that hasn't been happening for quite a few years as people are getting to old and the younger ones aren't so interested. Now we are more likely to be playing horseshoes.

I don't watch much hockey, but do know that it can be exciting to watch. I need to watch more, if for nothing else to learn the Canadian National Anthem. --- The last game I actually watched was the Women's game in the Olympics.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

Here, a lot of the young female fans who hang around with ice hockey players are known as puck bunnies!
