BOATY McBOATFACE  Blogland, we have a problem. The problem we have in the UK is very much like the Trump problem in the US. The Establishment wants one thing, and the people want another thing! In both countries, the Establishment may intervene in the election process to ensure the popular anti-Establishment choice doesn’t prevail. The UK’s Natural Environment Research Council, a government research funding council, is spending £200m to build a new royal research ship (RRS) designed to explore the polar seas in Antarctica and the Arctic. It decided to put the naming of the vessel to an online public vote. The leading contender at the moment is RRS Boaty McBoatface. This name, jokingly suggested by James Hand, has about six times the number of votes than the next two best-placed names combined, RRS Henry Worsley and RRS David Attenborough. Henry Worsley was a British army officer who died trying to cross the Antarctic. David Attenborough is a very popular BBC naturalist. Other contenders in the online poll are RRS Boat, RRS Big Shipinnit, RRS Big Metal Floaty Thingy-Thing, RRS Donald Trump, RRS Kanye West For President, RRS It’s Bloody Cold Here, RRS Usain Boat, RRS Fish N’ Chips, RRS Ice Ice Baby, RRS Pingu, RRS Netflix And Endure Sub-Zero, RRS What Iceberg?, RRS Skywalker, RRS I’m So Cold, RRS Slippery When Wet, RRS Antarctic Monkeys, RRS Do You Want Ice With That, RRS Lara Croft, RRS I Like Big Boats And I Cannot Lie, and RRS Wee-Willy Winkle. The Natural Environment Research Council’s chief executive claimed that "We are excited to hear what the public have to suggest and we really are open to ideas". But it will be interesting if they adopt the people’s choice of name. However, James Hand has since apologised for suggesting Boaty McBoatface as a name for the new polar research ship. I wonder whether the Establishment has leaned on him. If so, this may explain why Simon Lawrence, fearing that the Establishment will not allow the RRS Boaty McBoatface to sail, has suggested RRS Boaty McBoatface The Return; this name is also doing well in the poll. The American Establishment has only one Trump to deal with; the British Establishment has two Boaty McBoatfaces to deal with! What name should be given to the new polar research vessel? What name should be given to the new polar research vessel? There are lots of distinguished British explorers to name it after, but i think I'll sit this one out- it's way too much fun just watching. Have you ever named a boat? No. I did have a pet name for my mother-in-law though, and she was a war worn battle hardened superannuated old Dreadnought. When I met her she was well past due to be hauled into drydock to have the barnacles scraped off her hull and major repairs done to her superstructure. Online voting is precarious!  .. .. Might be a good idea to vet suggestions BEFORE putting it to a vote.  Wasn't David Attenborough the second place choice? .. I thought it was a lot closer at the time I first heard about this. ... I was agreeing with that name. - It might inspire people to learn about him. (But not most people. **sigh**)Now I think they should stick with Boaty McBoatface.  It certainly makes it more memorable and would likely grab more headlines!
