PHONING MOTHER

PHONING MOTHER

Research conducted by the UK’s Post Office found that men spend 24 hours and women spend 48 hours a year on the phone to their mother. One in five men confessed to only phoning their mother when they wanted something, and 5 per cent of men admitted to never phoning their mother.

Today is Mother’s Day here in the UK; I know Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days in different countries.

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in the US. In 1908 Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, now the home of the International Mother’s day Shrine - see below photo.

By 1911, following a campaign led by Anna Jarvis, all US states recognised the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day. In 1914, the US President Woodrow Wilson designated this day a holiday to celebrate motherhood. However, despite getting the day officially recognised, Anna Jarvis campaigned against the commercialisation of Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day was soon recognised by many other countries across the world.

Roughly how many hours a year do or did you speak to your mother on the phone?
Do you think Mother’s Day too commercialised?

When my mother was alive, I probably spent about 50 hours a year on the phone to my mother. We never lived close together, so we spoke on the phone a lot. I very much miss our phone calls, which often kept me on the straight and narrow!

I’m quite relaxed about the commercialisation of special days like Mother’s Day because I don’t have to go along with it if I don’t want to. I always sent my Mum a Mother’s Day card and phoned her up to wish her happy Mother’s Day.

I want to wish all mothers here a very special day.

My Mother lives just down the road less than half a mile so we see each other often whether it is her stopping in here or me stopping in there so I don't spend a whole lot of time on the phone with her as I prefer face to face rather than phone time.

I'm ambivalent on the commercialization of Mothers day. I don't do the required flowers or even the card regularly as I prefer to spend time doing something like bringing a pot roast down for dinner or playing cards or some other game.

Do you think Mother’s Day too commercialized? The idea of Mother's Dan, and Father's Day is a good one. too commercialized? Everything is.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

Roughly how many hours a year do or did you speak to your mother on the phone? Not many, we weren't that close. When she got sick, I visited her every other day and read to her, she didn't talk much.

Do you think Mother’s Day too commercialised? Isn't everything?

All these days are too commercialised but they are good ideas.

After I left home to come to Ireland I would talk to my parents every weekend and be on the phone for about an hour at a time.

Spunky, please tell your mom Happy Mother's Day from me. I mean it- without her efforts we would never have met here online. I owe her.

I don't know how many hours a year I spend talking to my own mom. When we talk, we talk long. I never time it or pay much attention to how long though.

I agree with you about the commercialization- I don't like it so I don't play. We usually go out to eat, for breakfast or dinner, on Mother's Day, but we do that fairly often anyhow. We'd go more often if she wanted to. I like my mom's company. She's pretty ornery and outspoken. I'm glad I didn't inherit that from her.

My upbringing was children where seem but never heard, so I don't spend much time on the phone with my parents. They have always lived within driving distance, I have keys to their home, so I always visited lots and talk face to face.

It helps that I could set my watch to their routine.

We are a close knit family. We spent a lot of time in person more than on the phone. While Mom was in a home with Dad from 2002 til Dad passed in 2005 and Mom in 2009, we saw them every day!

Sadly, my Mother has Alzheimer's and is in a care home but we (my siblings and visit her most days and give her flowers etc not just on Mother's Day.
I don't think it's over commercialised.

Face to face is always best. I always lived about 200 miles from my Mum so phoning, with occasional weekend visits, had to suffice.

Phoning your mother 30 hours a year while overseas is commendable.
