TIDY DESK, TIDY MIND

TIDY DESK, TIDY MIND

I’ve just read reviews of three books on the art of tidying. It’s been some day!

Marie Kondo has written two books on tidiness, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying and Spark Joy: An Illustrated Guide to the Japanese Art of Tidying. She is a 'decluttering consultant' and describes herself as a “tidying freak”.

In her Spark Joy book, Marie Kondo wrote that she “had failed to take storing toilet paper seriously”! She claimed that tidying up is the key to happiness.

Ursus Wehrli, a Swiss artist and comedian, has written a book on his compulsive tidiness, The Art of Clean Up: Life Made Neat and Tidy. Below are two of his photographs before and after he tidied up a car park!

It’s often said that a tidy desk means a tidy mind. My desk at home is quite tidy, but my desk at work is quite untidy!

I always vow to tidy up my office but it would take a good week to tidy up and I would create more mess by tidying up. Though untidy, I know exactly where everything is amidst the towering piles of paper!

My colleagues often chastise me for my untidy office, but I just quote Albert Einstein at them, "If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?"

How tidy are you at home?
Do you have a tidy or an untidy desk?
How tidy is your mind?

My mind is tidy, though not always with clean thoughts!

Researchers from the University of Minnesota University, led by Professor Kathleen Vohs, examined the 'tidy desk, tidy mind' phenomenon. They found that people with tidy desks are more conventional and compliant, whereas people with untidy desks are more creative and imaginative.

To read more on this riveting research, please see Vohs K D, Redden J P & Rahinel R (2013) Physical Order Produces Healthy Choices, Generosity, Conventionality, Whereas Disorder Produces Creativity Psychological Science 24(9) pp1860-1867.

I wouldn't call too many things in my life "tidy". Certainly not my desk or my mind!

I do have a system though. I can usually find something when I need it.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

How tidy are you at home? I have been referred to as "domestically challenged". When I have a live in g/f I'm usually better because I work better at those things when they are a "team" thing.
Do you have a tidy or an untidy desk? untidy, but I get the jobs I do done and I ask bosses who have said something what they want a clean desk or the job done right.
How tidy is your mind? I've never compared it to anyone else's soo . . .

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I have a messy desk and a messy house, but I get a burr every once in a while in my saddle and I neaten up everything! Everything in its place, a place for everything. That happened to be an important motto when living on the boat.
I guess, I 'll go neaten up right now! LOL

Do you have a tidy or an untidy desk? Very tidy, everything has its place

How tidy is your mind? Depending the subject quite tidy. But I do get off on a tangent occasionally

My home is small and usually tidy....unless I am in the midst of Spring cleaning.

My desk...when I worked....was full of files I was working on. I knew where everything was but I doubt anyone else would.

My mind is typically female...I can think of hundreds of things at any one time!!!

How tidy are you at home?
Think "tornado".

Do you have a tidy or an untidy desk?
That's where the tornado touched down first. There were casualties.

How tidy is your mind?
OK, TWO tornadoes and a typhoon. Maybe better add a blizzard- we don't have typhoons here, except in my mind.

My desk at work is fairly tidy... my desk at home not so much. I do most of my work at home, or in someone else's office.

How tidy are you at home? Well lets just say I know where everything is... but it's not likely anyone else is going to find what they are looking for unless I'm giving them detailed directions.

Do you have a tidy or an untidy desk? Same as above... my office is in my home...

How tidy is your mind? I'm not to sure how to answer this question... You might say I'm easily distracted when I'm not busy getting something done... I tend to have lots of things flying through there... I think the Air Traffic Control tower got blown up and unless I'm deep into a project I get side tracked easily by UFO's

Why would I take advice from anyone who calls themselves a “tidying freak”? They've already acknowledged that they have a problem!

And Einstein seemed a bit insecure about his desk... he probably had a small penis

How tidy are you at home? My home is pretty tidy because things out of place or a speck of dust drive me crazy.

Do you have a tidy or an untidy desk? My desk is another matter. Tsunami aftermath would be a way to describe it. Amazingly, I can still find things I need.

How tidy is your mind? Millions of things swirl there all at once with no hope for slowing down or any clarity.

A system is always important when trying to find things, even if the system is not to actively look for something in the hope you'll find it quicker than retarcing one's steps!

I love your term "domestically challenged"!
At work I once wrote down as one of my performance targets was to tidy my office, but my boss wouldn't have it!

I would never employ a consultant; they just steal your watch to tell you the time ... and then bill you!

How tidy is your mind? What's your question? I lost my train of thought. I was thinking about something else and got distracted. Ask me again in a minute or so.
