"I LIVE IN A TERRORIST HOUSE"

"I LIVE IN A TERRORIST HOUSE"

"I live in a terrorist house", so wrote a ten-year old muslim boy in a school class. The school decided to report the schoolboy to the Lancashire police. The boy was then interviewed by the police, with a social worker present, over suspected links to terrorism. The boy’s laptop was also examined by the police.

It turned out the boy had a made a spelling mistake. The boy had meant to write, "I live in a terraced house"!

Under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, many public sector workers (including teachers) have a statutory duty to report any suspected terrorist activity to the police.

In my job, I’ve been subject to such a statutory duty for some time. A student was once caught photocopying al-Qaeda’s bomb-making manual. My university alerted the police, who then arrested and questioned the student. The police released the student after finding out that he was a PhD student researching al-Qaeda!

Do you think the school should have reported the schoolboy to the police for suspected terrorist offences?
Do you think the university should have reported the student to the police for suspected terrorist offences?

In Middlesbrough, asylum seekers were recently accommodated in houses with all the front doors painted red. It’s no surprise that many of these houses were then attacked by far right supporters. It seems, in Middlesbrough, terrorists live in terraced houses with red front doors!

David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, recently announced that the government was setting aside monies for migrants to attend English language classes. I thought that this was a rare good move by the Conservative Government to help migrants integrate.

But how wrong I was; the announcement was part of the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy and the monies will only be spent on Muslim women attending language classes, presumably so they can shop their terrorising husbands to the police using the English language!

I’m trying desperately not to mention Donald Trump’s demand to stop Muslims entering the United States, but I’ve failed miserably! Surely he can’t be the next US President; please tell me he won’t occupy the White House!

If elected, please can someone paint the front door of the White House red? In my book, politicians who spew hatred are the architects of terrorism.

Nearly 600,000 Britons have signed the 'Block Donald J Trump from UK Entry' on the basis that his presence would be 'non-conducive to the public good'. Parliament very recently held a debate whether Donald Trump is welcome to visit the UK!

These are worrying times!

Do you think the school should have reported the schoolboy to the police for suspected terrorist offences?
The teacher/school should have tried to figure out what the boy meant on his paper.

Do you think the university should have reported the student to the police for suspected terrorist offences?
The teacher/school should have know it was for his PhD research.

Donald Trump WILL NOT be our next president.
If that somehow happens, I will move to Canada, and Canada will find itself with a refugee crisis!

Red doors? Really. .. That sounds horrible.

We had the kid who built a clock and it got reported as a bomb. An over-reaction that got even more overblown in the media. ... Fear and suspicion does more harm than good.

Do you think the school should have reported the schoolboy to the police for suspected terrorist offences?
You know, much as I'd like to say this is just a common sense thing, it's too easy to judge after the fact. I'd want more details on just how the school and the teacher failed before I'm willing to call them stupid. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Do you think the university should have reported the student to the police for suspected terrorist offences?
This one's easier for me. I have an innate distrust of the police- I don't live in the UK where the cops wear those cute little helmets and don't carry guns. I've known a lot of good cops...but I met a couple of complete dicks too.

As for Trump, he ain't gonna win. We've elected baboons before, but this one is just for show. The Republican party is in turmoil now, and there are no statesmen left in it to sort it out and draw them back to the sensible side of the line- they purged all of them in primaries and a mad rush toward fascism. But as much as I admire Canada and would love living there, this is our problem to solve. You have to fight for things you want, and you have to fight against things you don't want. I think the country is worth fighting for.

Times have changed Spunky from the safer world I once lived in. The threat of terrorism cannot be ignored by anyone and if you have a statutory duty to report anything which may indicate terrorist activities then you have to do it. Better to be over cautious than to see a terrorist attack.

As for only spending money on helping Muslim women...does this not put Cameron in a dodgy position?? I thought there were laws providing for equality between the sexes? Or do laws only apply to non Muslims?

As for Trump....don't even go there....surely the electorate in the States cannot be that stupid.

It is a very difficult question about providing asylum. If the requestor, no matter the ethnicity , or national origin can demonstrate the need, and has a verifiable background, then they should be welcomed. And be provided assistance to get started. The old days of virtual unrestricted entry should be over. The mickey mouse politicians views should be discounted and the process should be run by professionals. No discrimination by religion or location should occur. The world has changed so much that caution needs to be used, without "freezing" anyone out

I think the teacher should have asked the 10 year old what this word is before they started even thinking about police.

The university student should definitely have been reported and checked out very closely as well as continued checks. Why... because there is no good reason to photocopy a bomb making manual unless you want to know how to make bombs. Was he doing a report on how to make bombs? You can do plenty of research and reports etc. on al-qaeda without printing out bomb manuals.

You may not like the way your Prime Minister is thinking but it is necessary to have people on the inside to get information out as the bad guys don't generally call the police on themselves. But I think it would be better if they did provide the language help to both male and female immigrants.

Don't worry about Trump the chump he wont make it to the white house because Bernie Sanders is going to be our next president.

On this day in history (ok, I think it was yesterday) in 1977, Jimmy Carter pardoned all of the Vietnam draft dodgers.

I would become one of those "illegal aliens" that he fears so much!

Um, Mr Cruz is on his own. .. Who knows? If Trump wins (which he won't) we might need Ted's vast knowledge and fierce defensiveness of the Constitution.
Cruz is even scarier. He has a better chance and his tax ideas are actually worse than Trumps!

The entire Republican Party seems to be trying to generate fear. Trump will "make it all better". NOT!

"Make America Great Again"? .. Sure, a lot of things suck, but we're still pretty great.

I saw a montage of Trump asking "What's going on? .. What the hell is going on? .. We need to find out what's going on.". lmao! .. I don't want a president that has no idea what's going on.

I agree with you that both the school and university should have sorted the issues out themselves before alerting the police. The problem is that, because of the statutory duty to alert the police for suspected terrorism, everyone plays it very (too) safe!

It's an interesting point you raise about the monies only being available to Muslim women for English language classes. There are laws outlawing discrimination on the basis of both gender and religious affiliation here.
But perhaps Cameron is now above the law!

Migration is a massive issue in Europe nowadays. Borders are being sealed to stop the influx of migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
Politicains often don't help by lumping all migrants together.
As you rightly say there are asylum seekers seeking refuge. If their claims are bogus, they are deported but it often takes time for the authorities to investigate their claims.
There are economic migrants where governments allow people to work in their countries. There are also many illegal economic migrants who are deported if located.
In the European Union, people have the right to work in all 28 member states; this means the UK governmnet can't stop Poles etc working here.
Politicians need to distinguish between political, economic and legal migrants when talking about immigration.
