DAVID BOWIE, ASHES TO ASHES

David Bowie died today, a few days after his Blackstar album was released. My first thought was that it was a hoax; David Bowie was announcing his death to the world so that he could return as some Bowie-esque reincarnation.

I guess my post will be one of many in blogland. But here are eleven bits of trivia about David Bowie:
1. He switched his name from Davie Jones to David Bowie in 1966 after releasing three singles.
2. His 1973 song Aladdin Insane, based on his schizophrenic brother, is a pun on 'A Lad Insane'.
3. His ex-wife Angie Bowie, who is the mother of his Zowie now Duncan Jones, found her husband naked in bed with Mick Jagger, whom she claimed was infatuated with David Bowie.
4. In 2014 the Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield performed the David Bowie song Space Oddity live in space.
5. His single Where Are We Now? was released in secret on 8 January 2013.
6. On 3 July 1973, after playing live at the Hammersmith Odeon Theatre and simulating sex with Mick Ronson, David Bowie announced that this "is the last show we'll ever do"; he meant that it was Ziggy Stardust’s last show!
7. Wendy Leigh, in her 2014 book Bowie: The Biography, claimed that David Bowie was a cocaine-fuelled sex addict who held regular wild orgies in ‘the pit’, a four-foot-deep fur-covered bed in his lounge.
8. Mott the Hoople’s 1972 hit song All the Young Dudes was written by David Bowie; Iggy Pop’s 1977 hit song Lust for Life was co-written by David Bowie.
9. Tony Visconti was David Bowie’s long-standing record producer, though Chic’s Nile Rodgers co-produced David Bowie’s Let’s Dance album.
10. In 2013, he starred in the Louis Vuitton advert looking a bit like EastEnders Nick Cotton!
11. David Bowie had relationships with Elizabeth Taylor, Bianca Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, Susan Sarandon and Oona Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin’s widow; in 1992 he married the model Iman Abdulmajid.

Are you a fan of David Bowie’s music?
If so, what are you favourite David Bowie songs?

Though not a big fan of his post-1980s music, I think Bowie was a musical genius and a cultural icon. Spanning five decades, his music fused many different genres from rock, pop, soul, disco to techno. He was highly influential in music, fashion and lifestyle.

My favourite David Bowie songs are Heroes (1977), Aladdin Sane (1973), The Jean Genie (1976), V-2 Schneider (1977), Starman (1971), Rebel Rebel (1973), John, I’m Only Dancing (1972), Cracked Actor (1973), Kooks (1971), and Queen Bitch (1971). I'm a big fan of his 1970s music.

His worst musical venture by far was his 1982 Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy collaboration with Bing Crosby! Even heroes make mistakes though it was Xmas!

I first saw David Bowie in the 'Three Tuns' pub in Beckenham Kent , in the 60's just him and an acoustic guitar, sometimes he played with a few other folk musicians. He played as Davy Jones then.

Are you a fan of David Bowie’s music?
I liked him all right, but I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan. He was an interesting enough guy but not captivating to me like Oscar Wilde.

If so, what are you favourite David Bowie songs?
I think "Space Oddity" was very cool.

Very saddened by his death. I'm a big fan. I was thinking of posting a Bowie music quiz this Sunday as a tribute.
I have 35 albums and 75 singles in total but, as you say, he's been making music for 50 years, so that's just scratching the surface.
My favourite albums re Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust (of course) and Santa Monica Live.
Favourite tracks are 'Width of a circle', 'Wild is the Wind', 'Moonage Daydream', 'Rebel Rebel'.

I'm a huge fan. He has been a part of my life for so long and I found myself strangely upset when I heard the news this morning.

Favourite tracks...Heroes, Starman, Jean Genie, Space Oddity..

R.I.P.

Mixed thoughts...

I grew up in the 70s, so obviously he was a presence in my formative years.

However, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who would list anything he's done in the last 30 years as a favourite - just look at the songs people have mentioned here.

His early output was extraordinary, and permeated the lives of my generation. But I don't think he's been relevant since the 70s. A bit like the Stones really.

I am a fan, somewhat. I agree with you, especially with your last two sentences, what was he thinking! I'd include Space Oddity including the Chris Hadfield version! And Under Pressure and I love Lust For Life!
The BBC here has just gone mad for David Bowie. When the Queen dies, I'm emigrating!

yes, I was and still am a fan... I still like the Beatles... Joni Mitchell, Iron Butterfly...

my fav song is 'This is not America'... The reason being, that it was used in two interesting movies... 'The falcon & the snowman' & 'Training Day'. Also, this song was done with/without Pat Metheny & Anna Maria Jopek...

I also enjoyed his role in 'the labyrinth'...

Interesting person...

Well when the Queen dies and your countrymen go mad, then you shall immigrate to The States, if it is still allowed, or perhaps just emigrate until a state of normalcy returns. Either way, you have a friend in New Jersey. Damned a ff there are no secrets once they've been written. One needs to choose one's words carefully. xo
I've now packed my bags ready for my emoigration when the Queen dies!

I've not heard Bowie's 'This Is Not America' song; I'd stopped following him after the early 1980s. But I'll look out for the song now.
Thanks for stopping by.
