(GET YOUR KICKS ON) ROUTE 66

The song Route 66, originally titled (Get Your Kicks on) Route 66, was written by Bobby Troup in 1946. The song was performed by many artists, including Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Them and Depeche Mode.

I’m very tempted to hire a car for a road trip along Route 66. Established in 1926 but now decommissioned, Route 66 started in Chicago and ended up in Santa Monica, California. The 2,448-mile highway went through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

I’ve only been to four American states - New York, Pennsylvania, Texas (albeit very briefly), and Washington DC. As the three American states I most want to visit are Illinois (for Chicago), New Mexico (for Albuquerque and Santa Fe) and California (for San Francisco and Napa Valley), you can see why Route 66 appeals to me. Also, I can give Brooke Burke a lift provided she covers up!

How many American states have you visited?
What’s been your best road trip?
And what’s been your worst road trip?

My best road trips taken so far are on the A87 road along the West Coast of Scotland and on the M62 motorway across the Pennines, both run through amazingly rugged scenery. In the middle of the M62, there’s the farmhouse, Stott Hall Farm, which is surrounded by the motorway.

My worst road trip is the featureless M25 motorway orbiting London, especially during rush hour when it’s most congested. It was built to relieve traffic congestion, yet it only increased traffic congestion!

The worst thing about the M25 is that, even when snarled up, it’s still the quickest way to drive through London. There’s no escaping the M25!

How many American states have you visited?
I'm not sure...I'd have to sit back and do a count. I've driven through a lot when working, and that's not exactly visiting.

What’s been your best road trip?
My wife and I drove east to Gettysburg, then north to the Revolutionary War Battlefield at Saratoga. From there we drove to Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain and toured the old fort. We returned home via Niagara falls and Lillydale, New York, the spiritualist center. It was the best road trip because in spite of my employer cutting my vacation short through mismanagement, we needed the time away and got to spend a week together, part of it in the Adirondacks, which we particularly love. We visited Hancock Shaker Village on that trip, a persoanl Mecca of sorts for me. I got to pay homage to the Hancock Shaker woodworking bench in person!

And what’s been your worst road trip?
A trip from Norfolk, Virginia to my company home base in Elkhart, Indiana on Easter weekend. It was during the national fifty five mile an hour speed limit and I got popped by an Ohio state trooper near St. Clairsville doing sixty five downhill in my semi. I didn't have enough cash to cover the fine so I had to spend Easter weekend in jail and still pay the fine to get out on Monday.

Since I’ve lived in Calif, CO and AZ and traveled over I-40 (the current road over 66) a lot I am fairly familiar with the western portions of “66”.

How many American states have you visited? The ones I have stopped in and stayed in, not just passed through, are: HI, AZ, CA, NM, OR, ID, WY (Yellowstone), NV, UT, CO, GA, AL (overnight to do a major truck repair)

What’s been your best road trip? Too many trips to mention without discounting others. I did a lot of traveling for races, which was fun too.

And what’s been your worst road trip? Except for vehicle issues none really.

I've never been to the States.

My best road trip...a trip round the South and West of Ireland with a friend.....the worst....a nightmare dash to Edinburgh from London....overnight with no sleep and my brother, who was supposed to share the driving, in the back of the car with a broken leg in plaster!!!

I forgot the hard-count number, but I've been to 20-30 states. I've never been to the Northeast or the Northwest, and there are some gulf states that I've not been through.

Waiting for someone to say they've been to Nebraska.

Route 66 is no more. (The roads are still there, but the highway was decommissioned.) Still, I'd be happy to drive you along the route. That would be a fantastic road trip!

I have visited 19 states.

Best road trip... Florida Keys. University spring break, 5 ladies, 5 men, a Van and a trailer. So much fun it should be illegal.

There's no such thing as a bad road trip.

How many American states have you visited? 9 so far.

What’s been your best road trip? Maui, road drive to Hana. It's only 64 miles long but it took over 4 hours because of winding road with sharp corners and often only wide enough for one car. The scenery was breathtaking!

And what’s been your worst road trip? Russia - drive from St.Petersburg to Vologda. Road was so bumpy, I was afraid my teeth would break.

How many American states have you visited?
13, Utah, Colorado, Nevada, California, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Texas, Wyoming, Illinois, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

What’s been your best road trip? I've had a lot of good road trips, so can't single one out.

And what’s been your worst road trip? Worst road trip was probably a trip from Chicago to Kansas city, with a pissed off husband and whining kids.

I have been thru all the states and Canada as I rodeo for a living. Enjoyed every where I've been. Now i would really like to go back to all the places I have been and stay a few days to see the cities. While you are rodeoing for a living you don't get to stay awhile and visit because of the rodeoes.
Your rodeo life sounds fascinating.
Thanks foer stopping by.

I was trying to work out the states you've visited from the acronyms. I got them all except Georgia, which I had to look up!

What’s been your best road trip? Niagara Falls, I've been there three times.

And what’s been your worst road trip? Wheeling Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia, it is a Live Country Music show and radio broadcast, similar and second only to The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. My husband was "paid" in-kind for work he'd done for the company. The bus driver's busty wife stuck her boobs in my face while fawning over my new husband and cleaning his window, I had an aisle seat. Then one of the buses broke down on the way there. Since my husband was a mechanic, he had to try to get the bus started again while in the middle of the high way and standing in between the two buses. I was afraid a tractor trailer would rear end us and push our bus into my husband and the bus my husband was working on. That bus ended up being towed and we all had ride on one bus and stand for hours the rest of the trip. I told my husband this would be the last time he was going to accept payment-in-kind for work he'd done.
You've travelled widely in the States. i thought Americans didn't travel much!

OK, well now I am having flashbacks. He wasn't my husband, he was my new boyfriend. Our motel room smelled awful, like someone had spilled permanent wave solution in the dresser, a strong ammonia smell. And the room was full of flies. I don't think we could open the window so we tried leaving the door open. I imagined the ammonia was used to clean up the human remains which had drawn the flies.

In the bath there was black and white toile wallpaper. The images were of a woman in a claw-foot tub and of a man shaving at a pedestal sink. It was unusual wall paper, if it wasn't bad enough, someone had taken a pen to it and drawn a hard-on on the man all over the repeating pattern. That was good for a laugh the rest of the trip was pretty bad. I thought I'd for gotten it or successfully suppressed the memory until now... thanks for that Hugh.

Oh but that wasn't the worst room we had. Once we stayed over night at a Dulles Airport motel. The bedspread had blood on it and there was no other room and it was past midnight and our daughter had an early morning flight. We had just driven about five hours and were tired so we threw the bedspread on the floor and hoped the sheets were clean enough.

Then there was the Royal Eagle near Paddington. I have never seen such a small room, you couldn't be in the bath and use the sink at the same time, the door to the bath had to be open to use the bathroom sink. Our room was below grade there was a maze of stairs and hallways to get to our room. Up and down and up to get to the room, in the event of fire, we'd never gotten out.

The Royal National at Russell Square had no stairs on the first couple of levels, it was served only by the lift. Once we walked down the stairs from our upper most level room only to find a chained an locked gate at the bottom, again in a fire, we'd never have gotten out. You won't find that sort of thing in The States.

We do travel on the cheap, so expecting a fire escape is too much to ask. I suppose we get what we pay for.

This is not the wallpaper from the motel, but I thought you'd enjoy it.
I'd like to stay in a hotel with that wallpaper!
