TO BURP, OR NOT TO BURP, THAT IS THE QUESTION   Eructating - that’s burping or belching - is widely regarded as impolite. It’s claimed that only in Bahrain and China is a belch considered a compliment. In nearly all countries, belching is considered rude. However, there’s evidence that soda chugging burping contests are popular with American youngsters. I burp but I burp in private; I never stifle a burp. I believe a stifled burp is an impending fart! I think this is the reason why I never fart! Incredibly, there is the World Burping Federation which "promotes belching best practices and the pursuit of lifelong learning, while also seeking to remove the stigma that has become associated with belching in recent centuries." Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the World Burping Federation laments the stigma attached to burping. "Burping is a fundamental part of the digestive process, and the near universal stigma surrounding it has planted the seeds of shame in countless number of people, contributing to a subtle, but significant, degradation of the human experience", claims the World Burping Federation on its website. To combat the stigma attached to burping, the World Burping Federation organises belching competitions across the world; these competitions involve both duration and decibel burping! It’s also planning to hold burp-talking competitions in the future. In 2012, the innocent-looking Tim Janus was crowned the first world burping champion after he burped for 18.1 seconds in a competition held in New York. "Most striking to me is the emotional range of Janus' burp", said Sebastian Rothschild, the executive director of the World Burping Federation. "It is at once mournful and full of hope." I’m not all surprised Tim Janus won the world title; he clearly is two-faced and thus has two mouths to burp from! What do you do when you want to burp?
