AMSTERDAM CALLS Damrak’s red light district:  The only window shopping I like is the window shopping in Amsterdam. Amsterdam’s red light district is in the heart of the city, Damrak, amidst bars, restaurants and shops. The red light district is very much on the tourist trail. The women in the windows understandably get cross if tourists stare at them and especially if they photograph them at work. This weekend I’m off to Amsterdam with my girlfriend, her grown-up and her ’s girlfriends. There will be eight of us! I’ve probably been to Amsterdam over twenty times now. Even though it’s quite a small city, I never tire going there. For me, it’s pleasure city! Amsterdam is a bit of a nod-and-wink place. When you tell people you’re going to Amsterdam, they just give you a knowing look assuming you’re going to have lots of sex with prostitutes or you’re going to get constantly stoned in coffee shops, and even both! I always say I’m going for the art galleries. There are lots of them in Amsterdam, including the Van Gogh Museum. I always enjoy going round this gallery. Van Gogh’s De Slaapkamer is one of my favourite paintings. I also enjoy taking a trip on the canals of Amsterdam. The city has some amazing old buildings, all with large windows. You can peep into people’s homes! I’d love to live in an apartment overlooking an Amsterdam canal. If people still don’t believe that I’m going for high culture, I’ll then say I’m going to buy some tulips from the floating flower market on the Singel canal! If still not believed, I’ll admit I go for the fine dining and fine beers. Amsterdam has lots of old brown bars where you can drink strong coffee, strong beer and strong but warming jenever. The city has lots of restaurants. Dutch pancakes (pannekoeken), Argentinian steaks and Indonesian food are its forte. I particularly enjoy Indonesian cuisine, especially the rice table (rijstaffel) consisting of lots of small dishes. If my reasons for going to Amsterdam are still not believed, I’ll admit that I’m dragged into the coffee shops and forced to smoke! They’re not really coffee shops though you can buy and drink coffee at these shops! It always amazes me when I’m forcibly taken into a coffee shop to see a menu of stuff that’s illegal here! When in Amsterdam, I enjoy people-watching over a coffee or beer and just walking around carefully avoiding all the bikes and trams. Also, I enjoy shopping on Kalverstraat - it’s great for buying clothes. I’m looking for a pair of shoes this time. Also I may do some Xmas present shopping. This weekend I may suggest to everyone that we go to the Amsterdam Sex Museum as I haven’t visited this high-culture establishment yet! However, I prefer sex in a hotel than in a museum. I think there’ll be lots of sex; both my girlfriend get very randy when stoned! The key is to find a coffee shop near our hotel! Have you been to Amsterdam? Have you been to Amsterdam? NO! Here all we have are Holland, Michigan, where their butts are so tight you couldn't drive a needle up them with a sledgehammer, or Saugatuck, just south of there, in more ways than simple geography, which is a resort town catering to a gay and lesbian clientele. If not, would Amsterdam appeal to you for a city break? YES! What place have you been to most for a weekend break? Nowhere exotic. We go to the beach in South Haven. We love Amsterdam, have been going there dfor the last 30 years, about once sometimes twice a year. We do go to the coffee shops but avoid the red light district. we love the bars resturants and the canals and the culture. we even had a adate there once , loverly man was a real stud too

I have fond memories of Amsterdam. All of it. I even got ripped off there in 1972, and that was fun, too. I wish I was there right now.

Have you been to Amsterdam? Yes, twice. Once for just one day on my way to Copenhagen to visit family, and second time stayed in Amsterdam for tree days, but never got to visit sex museum. Next trip perhaps. If not, would Amsterdam appeal to you for a city break? Definitely. What place have you been to most for a weekend break? The best place around here is up in the mountains - Big Bear Lake. It's beautiful and peaceful, and only two hours away. I have not been, but wouldn't mind going, maybe someday. We don't really go anywhere for a weekend break. I don't want to board my old dog in a kennel and I really don't think I'd like taking him along. So we don't usually get away. If we were to go, I'd have my sister watch him; it is two hours to her house and we've only done that when we visit the UK. Safe travels my friend, remember to pace yourself. I expect a full report upon your return.
