This brute of a car park has now been demolished. The car park was an example of concrete brutalism, an architectural style that flourished from the 1950s to the mid-1970s. In this period, government buildings, car parks, university campus buildings, office blocks, shopping centres, schools and high-rise housing blocks all succumbed to concrete brutalism. Concrete brutalism was particularly influential in communist Europe. Highly functionalist and aesthetically minimalist, these concrete buildings divide opinion. Fans of concrete buildings point to their modern and functional design and their relatively low cost of construction. Critics have often said these buildings look cold and uninviting, quickly deteriorate and symbolise urban decay. Prince Charles was no fan of these "piles of concrete" and he once observed: "You have to give this much to the Luftwaffe. When it knocked down our buildings, it didn't replace them with anything more offensive than rubble." There have been several conservation campaigns to save them from demolition - some campaigns were successful (eg Scotland’s St Peter’s Seminary, Preston’s bus station) and some weren’t successful (eg Gateshead’s Trinity Square car park, Portsmouth’s Tricorn Centre). The Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth, where I used to live, was hated by the locals; in fact, it was voted the most hated building in Britain. Prince Charles described the building as "a mildewed lump of elephant droppings". Despite a last-ditch campaign to save the building, it was demolished in 2004. Another controversial building is the now protected Trellick Tower designed by Ernő Goldfinger. Ian Fleming based the villain in his 1959 novel Goldfinger on the architect. Ernő Goldfinger threatened legal action before the book was published. The book’s publisher, Jonathan Cape, agreed to make clear that Goldfinger was based on a fictitious character. Ian Fleming was furious with his publisher. Instead, he wanted an erratum slip placed in all copies of the first edition announcing that Auric Goldfinger should be called Auric Goldprick! I don’t think all concrete buildings are bad or that they’re all good. There are very good concrete buildings (eg Belgrade’s Western City Gate, Cap d’Agde’s Heliopolis) and there are very bad concrete buildings (eg London’s Andrew Fleming House, London's Hayward Gallery). Having sex in a concrete-built car park is still on my to-do list! MB travels quite a bit in Eastern Block Europe. He says it is the ugliest drab area he has ever been to. Especially, Bucharest. He told me they are very proud of their concrete monstrosity of a capitol. and. yes, I have fucked in a concrete car park.

 As someone that wanted to be an architect but didn't quite make it, I hate these monstrosities, and all the new glass and steel building that there are ruining Londons once beautiful skyline with .Bricks and morter are for me.

Hiya Hugh! I am just checking in with you. I am looking for cement houses of Lehigh County. I know there are some and they do not look awful at all. "Bricklayer Joseph Aspdin of Leeds, England first made portland cement early in the 19th century by burning powdered limestone and clay in his kitchen stove. With this crude method, he laid the foundation for an industry that annually processes literally mountains of limestone, clay, cement rock, and other materials into a powder so fine it will pass through a sieve capable of holding water. " Many immigrants were employed by Lehigh Portland Cement. I grew up in the Lehigh Valley, near enough to hear and feel them blasting the limestone a key ingredient. Children of the school district are known as the Konkrete Kids. My grandfather Stephanus, his brother Prokopius and their brother Syvester were employed by Portland Cement, either in the mill or the quarry. My mother was born on Ormrod in a factory house. If I find a photo of a cement house, I will post it. (sorry for reposting, I had to fix a typo, now I am not the first one here)

Where I grew up, because I know you find me fascinating Hugh and want to know all about me! I live in an area once called “Grouse Hall”, but the common people of the region called it “White Hall”. Whitehall Township ’s villages include Cementon , Egypt , Fullerton , Hokendauqua, Mickleys, Stiles and West Catasauqua . Coplay was also part of Whitehall until it incorporated as a borough in 1869." "While the railroads were being constructed, cuts in the bedrock led to the discovery of Whitehall ’s deposits of Jacksonburg limestone or “cement rock”. David O. Saylor perfected and patented the process of manufacturing Portland Cement. The first Portland Cement plant was located between the villages of Cementon and Coplay. Others quickly followed and, by 1914, 70% of the cement produced in the United States came from the “Cement Belt” or Lehigh District. The cement industry attracted a new wave of immigrants from Austria-Hungary, creating yet another population spurt."

While concrete structures can be quite minimalist, the concrete houses of the 19th century were beautiful. I have not found the picture of the house that was near the area where I grew up, but here is one from South London. 549 Lordship Lane, one of the last surviving concrete-built house from the 19th century "The derelict Victorian house next to a busy junction in south London, shored up by scaffolding and garlanded in ivy, does not at first glance seem exceptional. But the structure, now saved after years of neglect, could perhaps be seen as the great-great-grandfather of all the tower blocks that fill Britain's cities."

Many people in the UK think the same. Victorian buildings seem to last longer than more recent buildings, and they often look better!

There's some evidence here that, over time, people get used to and even like brutalist concrete buildings, particularly when faced with demolition!
