OUR MAN IN HAVANA

Maureen O’Hara, Fidel Castro and Alec Guinness:

A phrase has been bugging me all week - bugging me in a good way not in a bad way.

"As long as nothing happens, anything is possible", so wrote Graham Greene in his Our Man in Havana novel published in 1958. The book, set in pre-revolutionary Cuba, was later turned into a film starring Alec Guinness, Noël Coward and Maureen O’Hara.

I can’t fathom whether "As long as nothing happens, anything is possible" is an expression of positive thinking at its best or of procrastination at its worst. I haven’t read the book or seen the film to know what Graham Greene meant by the phrase.

Cuba is one country I’d love to visit sooner rather than later and certainly before global capitalism takes over the island. If the women would get out of the way, there are cars and buildings to admire, there’s rum and mojito cocktails to drink, and there are cigars to smoke even though they’re not rolled on the thighs of virgins!

If nothing happens, is anything possible?
Have you been to Cuba? If so, what was it like?
If you could go on an expenses-paid holiday (vacation to my North American friends), where would you go?

Cuba would be near the top of my list of places to go, as well as the Amazon rainforest, Greenland, Namibia and New Mexico. Australia, Costa Rica, Italy, San Francisco and Vietnam are also tempting.

But I’ll settle for Cuba just to find out if anything is possible when nothing happens! Also I can wear my Cuban heels!

I hope you can spot the two men seemingly kissing in a car.

"As long as nothing happens, anything is possible"
This ranks right up there with "What is the sound of one hand clapping?", "Everything is true and nothing is permitted." and "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife." for sheer absurdity. If thy neighbor did not wish his wife to be coveted, he ought to have married Lena Dunham.

If nothing happens, is anything possible?
If nothing happens nothing is possible. With a fifty per cent chance of rain.

Have you been to Cuba? If so, what was it like?
No. But it's still possible.

If you could go on an expenses-paid holiday (vacation to my North American friends) where would you go?
Possibly Cuba. And I'll take "Holiday" for fifty dollars, please.
Vacations are being rescinded by employers all over North America. If we change the name, there's a chance- excuse me, possibility- we can throw them off our scent for a few years.

I know that if I shag one sister then the probability of shagging the other one decreases, but if I do nothing then I might still shag either

Never been, likely won't ever visit. (I may have seen the island from a plane, when I was 8 year old and flying from Miami to Panama.)

Cuba has been in the news lately.

I can't wait to try one of their cigars!

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

I think once something happens, we must react or choose not to react but the possibilities have been narrow...no longer open to anything.
Says the resident psychologist...

I have not been to Cuba. I would enjoy a visit though.
All expenses paid...Spain, United Kingdom, Norway, Prince Edward Island and New Zealand.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

If nothing happens, is anything possible? Dear Dr. Spunky. I have not yet formed an opinion. Perhaps when I have done the required reading I will be able to comment further. How is it that you have neither read the book nor have seen the film and yet you ponder the meaning of the quote?

Have you been to Cuba? If so, what was it like? I have not.

If you could go on an expenses-paid holiday (vacation to my North American friends) where would you go? all expenses paid! I would see everything there is to see, absolutely everything.
That'll be one long holiday but I'll go with you!

If you buy the lottery tickets and I win, I'll treat you to an all-expense paid trip to England, Scotland and Ireland! What's wrong with Wales? Forget that question, it rains all the time!
