IN PRAISE OF JULIA

This is a true story about a woman, Julia, and the men in her life.

As leader of the Labor Party, Julia Gillard became Australia’s Prime Minster between 2010 and 2013. She was the country’s first female prime minister and the first prime minister not to be born in Australia since 1923 - she’s also unmarried, childless, an atheist, a redhead and a republican heavily criticised for only bowing and not curtseying to the Queen. How many more political crimes can a female politician commit?!

As Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard controversially and successfully challenged the then Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, after he lost the support of Labor MPs. She became Prime Minister of a Labor government in June 2010. After the August 2010 federal election, Julia Gillard was the Prime Minister of a Labor-led minority government and she appointed Kevin Rudd as Minister for Foreign Affairs.

In February 2012, amid poor ratings for the Labor Party, Kevin Rudd resigned from the Government questioning Julia Gillard’s leadership. Julia Gillard called a leadership election which she went on to comfortably win.

In March 2013, with Labour’s polling ratings still falling, one government minister called for another leadership election. As well as sacking the minister, Julia Gillard called for a snap leadership election that same day! Ten minutes before the leadership ballot was to take place, Kevin Rudd announced that he wouldn’t stand for leadership. Julia Gillard was thus re-elected unopposed.

By June 2013 with Labor facing electoral defeat and amidst rumours that Rudd was to challenge for the leadership yet again, Julia Gillard called yet another leadership contest. This time Kevin Rudd stood and won the leadership contest. Julia Gillard then announced her resignation as Prime Minister and her intention to quit Australian politics.

Just for the record, Kevin Rudd led the Labor Party to election defeat later on that year. The Liberal leader Tony Abbott then became the Prime Minister of a coalition government from 2013 until earlier this year when he too was deposed by Malcolm Turnbull in a coup within the Liberal Party.

Julia Gillard suffered considerable sexism and misogyny - the body language of the photos posted here says it all!

Tony Abbott, Julia Gillard's political opponent, regularly made speeches in front of 'Ditch the Witch' and 'Ditch the Bitch' placards.

The radio presenter Alan Jones suggested that Julia Gillard should be "put into a chaff bag and thrown into the sea". The chief executive of the Australian Agricultural Company suggested that Julia Gillard should be destroyed just like "the old cows that become non-productive".

On the menu of a Liberal Party dinner was the dish, 'Julia Gillard Kentucky Fried Quail - Small Breasts, Huge Thighs & A Big Red Box'! One newspaper cartoonist sent every Australian MP images of Gillard wearing a strap-on dildo.

Even the allegedly feminist Germaine Greer referred to Julia Gillard’s "fat arse". I think Barack Obama may like Julia Gillard’s arse!

In politics, politicians’ most bitter enemies are not their political opponents but their party colleagues! Politics is brutal and Australian politics is especially brutal.

Do you think politics is too brutal?
Do you think the world needs more female politicians?
Who are your favourite female politicians?

As well as Julia Gillard, my favourite female politicians are Hillary Clinton, Angela Merkel and, it pains me very much to say this, Margaret Thatcher! Though I may not agree with their politics - and in the case of Margaret Thatcher I didn’t agree with any of her politics, I admire their successful perseverance in a largely man’s world!

Do you think politics is too brutal?
There are times it isn't brutal enough.

Do you think the world needs more female politicians?
Not necessarily. The world does not need more Sarah Palins. And I don't agree with you about Thatcher. I didn't agree with her policies either and I'd have been perfectly content had she failed.

Who are your favourite female politicians?
It's a long list and you probably haven't heard of any of them: Barbara Boxer, Elizabeth Warren, Jennifer Granholm, Gretchen Whitmer and Nancy Pelosi are just a few. I like Glenda Jackson quite a lot too.

Politics and politicians just keep getting nastier and nastier. The election in 2016 in the U.S. is going to be absolutely brutal and horrible.

Funny women are incredibly sexy!

I don't have a favorite politician of either gender. We are voting for our next Prime Minister on Oct 19th. I already voted in the advance poll.

I detest politics and all politicians. I think all politicians should spend at least 20 years working low labor or low office jobs in corporate world and volunteer in shelters for homeless and abused, before they could apply for the privilege to make decisions for regular people.

It pains me to say, that my favorite of the three you mentioned at the end is Angela Merkel.

"Hilliary" is a good politician, but that is one of the reasons I don't like her.
And well, "Thatcher" I always associate with 'Regan'.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

I do believe women have to fight, not just for intellectual position but also for a physical position. When a man in politics feels threatened by a female politician, he insults her looks or her pussy. I have yet to see any political banter where a woman questions a mans looks or his dick.

Anne Richards of Texas was a fun politician to watch. Gabriella Gifford of Arizona has a strong intellect and tried very hard to serve her people well. Nikki Haley of South Carolina seems to be holding her own quite well.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Hmm... I have no comment. It was difficult enough to read your post, let alone have enough mental clarity to comment. I drugged myself to sleep last night and have a hangover today. I am recuperating.

I just wanted you to know I was here.
I'm just pleased you attended the class even if you didn't do your homework!

I've heard of Elizabeth Warren and Nancy Pelosi - two very fine Democrat politicians.
Glenda Jackson never made much of a splash here for some reason.

The Queen is one of the very people, along with prisoners, in the UK not allowed to vote!

I can't see politicians voting for no career politicians. Once elected, politicians often go native!

That's a good idea for politicians to work in other fields. It used to be the case here but no longer!

Angela Merkel is now facing a backlash in Germany over her decision to let Syrian migrants into Germany. She's now thinking of putting the migrants in concentration camps - sorry, transit camps!

The Australian Labor Party seemed to be in permanent coup-mode during the Rudd/Gillard years.
Here in the UK, Caroline Lucas is our only Green MP; she's a very impressive politician.
