A ROACH CALLED COCK

"These are all my babies", says a Chinese woman who keeps 100,000 cockroaches in her home.

Yuan Meixia sells her "babies" to a pharmaceutical company to be used to make medicines. She drowns them in vats of water then dries them under the sun before placing them in plastic bags and selling them, hardly a way to show love for babies!

The insects have a run of her house in a rural village in Fujian. Every crevice or hole in the house is sealed with cement to keep the cockroaches in.

The cockroaches are ensured comfortable conditions in hot and cold weather. When hot, Yuan Meixia cools down the house by sprinkling water on the walls; and when cold, she turns on a gas-fired stove to keep the insects warm.

She feeds her "babies" at 6pm every day. They are fed fruit and bran every day. Yuan Meixia says that, when fed, the cockroaches "mate with each other after eating" that "lasts for two hours". Randy buggers!

What would you do if you found a cockroach in your home?
Would you ever consider adopting a cockroach as a pet?
Are cockroaches good for anything?

Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects. Many can survive for a month without food, can go without air for 45 minutes, can survive submerged underwater for 30 minutes, can survive decapitation for several hours, and have a very high resistance to radiation.

Scientists from the Free University of Brussels have found that cockroaches have different personalities; some cockroaches are shy and other cockroaches are bold. If getting a pet cockroach, you need to consider its personality to check whether it’s compatible with your personality!

Researchers from the Texas A & M University have built a robot cockroach. They have fused a cockroach with a miniature computer wired into the its nervous system. The cockroach can be fitted with cameras, microphones and other sensors and be programmed to go into places that humans can’t or don’t want to go into.

My pet cockroach, called Cock, is very handy in the kitchen! Cock calls my cock, Roach!

I would think there are better ways to farm roaches without having them run free throughout the house. But then, that story is in china.

What would you do if you found a cockroach in your home?
I would definitely NOT tell my wife! I guess I'd try to catch it and take it outside. That's what I do with most bugs I find. The only things I kill on sight are hornets and yellowjackets. I have a history with those pricks!

Would you ever consider adopting a cockroach as a pet?
Hmmm....probably not. They should really run wild and free and unrestrained in the wind like the majestic beasts that they are. Just like capitalism.

Are cockroaches good for anything?
Well, they are sort of scavengers, and clean up after us. And they have a lock on the U.S. Congress...

I lived on a wooden boat. There is no way to avoid roaches on them. We somehow lived along with them.
Only their shit is a nuisance, they don't carry sicknesses, they only smell bad when crushed.

I never even thought of adopting one, and my nowadays home is free of these disgusting animals.

Cockroaches are incredibly good at surviving, you said it. They would survive an atomic explosion.

In the south we have palmetto bugs. They are huge, look like roaches and fly. I have an exterminator come out to the house every two months. We find them dead or dying all the time. I used to be terrified of them. Now, I just grab a shoe or some such thing and smash them.
Since moving to the marsh I have become quite the brave soul...that is, until I find a rather large spider in my house. Then, all bets are off.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Canyaz is right! I live in Palmetto bug country, too. Those suckers are bigger than my thumb, and when they fly they don't fly far. Usually just far enough to land in my hair. Ugh!

blog on!

Being the woman of the house, the protector, the one who comes running when the kids scream, I have to say, the ugly intruders don't faze me much. Splat, clorox, done.

We live right on the water. Have domestic indoor/outdoor cats. Used to scooping up eviscerated mice, rats, moles, bunny rabbits.

I only have a moment of weakness for the rabbits. Otherwise, business as usual.

Oh and very eco-conscious here. Baits, no sprays. And killing-machine felines. Meow!

I think in the West, cockroaches wouldn't be allowed to be farmed in homes.

What would you do if you found a cockroach in your home? I never had a roach in my house until we moved to the south, there most people seem to have them. They are wood roaches and breed outside, but are attracted to lights and may fly into a house. They can be a couple of inches long. Once one landed on me as I arrived home and came into the house with me, it was about 2 inches long. I went outside and knocked it off but it left me feeling a bit buggy. We had a German exchange student who brought New York City cockroaches with her in her luggage. She left, but the roaches remained, it took a bit of an effort but we were able to rid ourselves of them. The are as small as ants when they hatch and they fly and frequent the sinks and bathtubs. Borax sprinkled in all the water sources finally did them in.
Would you ever consider adopting a cockroach as a pet? No
Are cockroaches good for anything? Not as far as I am concerned and neither are mosquitoes.
I hope you'll get to like cockroaches as I've just bought a couple of pet cockroaches for you as a present!
