WANT SOME GOSSIP?  According to the American journalist Earl Wilson, "Gossip is when you hear something you like about someone you don't." Gossip stems from the Old English word goddsibb, meaning a godparent. The term originated from women chattering during social occasions at the birth of a . In the sixteenth century, the word referred to a person, usually a woman, who engaged in idle talk and liked to tattle. Gossip is often something that no one likes but what everyone does. There is a Filipino proverb, 'It is easier to dam a river than to stop gossip'. I quite enjoy a gossip provided it stops short of a witch-hunt, though I go along with the adage, 'Anyone who will gossip to you, will gossip about you'. Research has found that gossip is very useful in forming relationships, especially in the workplace. But research has also found that gossip is often harmful to those being gossiped about. Gossip is both inclusive and exclusive; it binds insiders together by creating and dishing an outsider. At my last workplace, there was a lot of gossip. According to gossip, I was shagging every woman with a pulse! But in my present workplace, there is no gossip - it’s boring! Or perhaps no one chooses to gossip to me. Or, even better, perhaps everyone is gossiping about me! As Oscar Wilde once quipped, "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about." Do you enjoy a gossip? Do you enjoy a gossip? I like some light hearted gossip that is more of a tease, but absolutely detest cruel and judgemental whispering behind people's backs. Do women gossip more than men? One might think so, but I've known men who were more proficient and involved gossipers. What was the last bit of gossip about you? I ran into someone at the market the other day. That woman and I never really got along. While we were exchanging greetings, a blind man with his service dog entered the market. That dog looked like he (it was a he) just got out of grooming salon, and looked magnificent. I commented on that, and the woman said: "Do you know what people say about you? Your priorities are SO screwed up: you love dogs the most, then men, and then the rest of the world." She was right, you know. Do you enjoy a gossip? No not really, I find it distasteful! Do women gossip more than men? I do think so due to the fact woman talk and communicate with each other better. Men don't talk about the details of relationships amongst ourselves (well at least my guy friends don't). What was the last bit of gossip about you? Do you enjoy a gossip? Sometimes, if it's especially juicy and funny. I don't much care for attempts at character assassination though, and that often masquerades as gossip. Do women gossip more than men? Well of course they do! When me do it it's called bullshitting. What was the last bit of gossip about you? I don't know- nobody would tell me. Do you enjoy a gossip? I suppose I do, just as much as the next person, but I try not to do it, failing often. Do women gossip more than men? The notion that women gossip more than men is an unfair stereotype. I think it really depends on the individual and is not dependent upon gender. What was the last bit of gossip about you? There have been several scandalous episodes in my life that have generated some gossip. I'll tell you mine, if you tell me yours. For now though, I'll leave you guessing.
