FROM DISNEYLAND TO DISMALAND

I love fairgrounds but not amusement parks (or theme parks, fun parks or whatever other name is given to them). Amusement parks are far from amusing - the queues of people wanting to be amused, the corporate-controlled amusement, and the prison-like park where people get amused.

A few days ago a new amusement park, Dismaland, was opened in Weston-super-Mare near Bristol in England. It’s a pop-up art exhibition branded as a bemusement park. It’s billed as "UK’s most disappointing new visitor attraction".

Dismaland includes works of art from the likes of Banksy, Damien Hirst and Jenny Holzer.

This is what the official brochure says about Dismaland:

“Are you looking for an alternative to the soulless sugar-coated banality of the average family day out? Or just somewhere cheaper. Then this is the place for you - a chaotic new world where you can escape from mindless escapism. Instead of a burger stall, we have a museum. In place of a gift shop we have a library, well, we have a gift shop as well.
Bring the whole family to come and enjoy the latest addition to our chronic leisure surplus - a bemusement park. A theme park who’s big theme is: theme parks should have bigger themes…
This event contains adult themes, distressing imagery, extended use of strobe lighting, smoke effects and swearing. The following items are strictly prohibited: knives, spraycans, illegal drugs, and lawyers from the Walt Disney corporation.”

On entry visitors are required to undergo extensive security-screening. Once screened, visitors can enjoy a carousel and Ferris wheel that don’t work, play the 'topple the anvil with a ping pong ball' game, participate in Occupy protests, buy an 'I Am An Imbecile' balloon, and ask for but not get help from miserable staff.

Do you enjoy amusement, fun or theme parks?
Have you ever visited Disneyland or Disney World?
Would you visit Dismaland?

I’m very tempted to get down to Dismaland before 27 September when it closes; I need cheering up!

Below are some of Dismaland’s attractions!

Do you enjoy amusement, fun or theme parks?
I like watching- and photographing- people, so I do like crowds. That's really the only draw such a place would have for me. We visit county fairs and festivals for people watching, and never go to amusement parks.

Have you ever visited Disneyland or Disney World?
No- I'm clean.

Would you visit Dismaland?
Yes, I think I'd like to see this one.

Do you enjoy amusement, fun or theme parks? NO, if there were none of the crowds of rude an sweaty people I might.

Have you ever visited Disneyland or Disney World? Yes, whatever the Florida one is called, several times. The best was a couple years ago, I stayed in an on site hotel with a FWB. We never went into the site, just stayed in our room

Would you visit Dismaland? Maybe, it does not seem to have crowds

No I don't like anything like that....I am not very comfortable in crowds.

I have never been to either but one of my granddaughters danced in Disney Land two years ago.

No I wouldn't go there.

Well that's just. . . just . . . um, just . . . dismal. I think I will pass. Your images will suffice and I have gotten all the dismal I can use now.

Do you enjoy amusement, fun or theme parks? Yes, better than fairs.

Have you ever visited Disneyland or Disney World? Yup, once to Disney World, it was my first flight, we were moved to first class, first seats, I could see into the cockpit out the front window. I was afraid of flying and cried they whole way there, terrified my daughter. When we hit some turbulence, she lept up and shouted, "we're going down". I clamped my hand over her mouth to hush her up. She was about eight or nine at the time. I wish she and her father had taken those seats and I had sat away from her, across the aisle. At the end of the flight, my daughter got her wings, from the stewardess, I only got a dirty look.

I am still afraid of flying, but when I must, I channel Eleanor Roosevelt, who once said, you must do the very thing you are most afraid of. I'd rather channel Eleanor than Amelia Earhart, as I am not that brave and I don't like the outcome of Earhart's last flight. I am not a professional medium, it's just a past-time, nor am I a mentalist.

Would you visit Dismaland? Oh no, I think you have covered the place quite enough for my liking.
I don't like flying either, but I won't let my fear stop me flying.
I thought Dismaland would be right up your street!

I've not been to Disneyland or Disney World even though there's one in Paris. Unless I was entertaining kids, they don't appeal to me!
