UNPROTECTED SEX
UNPROTECTED SEX Everyone now knows about Ashley Madison, the dedicated adultery site with 37.4 million members from over 50 countries (but not from Singapore and South Korea where the site’s banned). 1.2 million Britons have joined Ashley Madison - we do seem to like an affair! Here’s my take on the incident for what it’s worth. Launched by the Canadian multimillionaire founder Noel Biderman in 2001, Ashley Madison is valued at $1 billion. In 2014 the company generated $1.7 million in revenue. How this site would probably wish for such figures! Ashley Madison's slogan is 'Life is short, have an affair'! Biderman admitted that "We do really well in tough economic times" as marriages are put under strain. It’s great to hear that someone is profiting from, sorry, doing well in hard times! Bloomberg Businessweek described Biderman as "possibly evil". Ashley Madison was due to be listed on the London Stock Exchange to raise money though many banks are reluctant to invest. In the words of one leading stockbroker: "Lots of people gamble, lots of people drink and smoke, and I don’t have any objection to that, but this is something different. There is no way my firm will touch this deal with a 10ft barge pole." Bankers do have morals, you know! About a month ago, hackers, who called themselves the Impact Team and who called Ashley Madison’s members "cheating dirtbags", obtained the personal details of Ashley Madison’s membership. The hackers threatened to publicly disclose details unless Ashley Madison closed down its site and its sister site, Established Men, which connects rich 'sugar daddies' with younger women. The two sites didn't shut down. Two days ago, the hackers went ahead with their threat and posted Ashley Madison’s membership details on the dark web. Here’s a selection of where the hacked e-mail addresses come from: US government (15,000), US army (6,788 ), the Vatican (219), Harvard University (137), British government (133), UK Ministry of Defence (100), Amazon (80), United Nations (19), and JP Morgan (a mere 6 and further proof of bankers' morals!). I'm surprised the Canadians aren't heading this list! The email address of a Scottish National Party MP was one of those addresses disclosed; the MP dismissed claims that she was a member of the Ashley Madison site. Tony Blair is implicated (as always) because the tblair@ labour.gov.uk is on the list of hacked email addresses! Most worrying for British national security, the head of MI5, Britain’s Security Service, is an adulterer. The email address M@ MI5.mod.uk is on the list! Worry, fear, confessionals, denials, marriage guidance, divorce (the first divorce papers have already been filed), lawsuits against the company, job resignations and sackings, blackmail, extortion, persecution, imprisonment, torture and even death are likely to follow in the wake of this incident. One gay man is worried about his life as homosexuality doesn’t go down very well in Saudi Arabia. In America, the executive director of the Family Research Council, Josh Duggar, recently confessed to being a member of Ashley Madison. The Family Research Council is a conservative lobbying group seeking “to champion marriage and family as the foundation of civilization, the seedbed of virtue, and the wellspring of society.” Josh Duggar seemed to have paid $250 for an 'affair guarantee'. Guaranteed members get their money back if they don’t have an affair within three months. Why doesn’t this site have such a guarantee for getting laid? The most unseemly episode so far in the Ashley Madison affair happened yesterday on Australian radio. On Nova FM’s breakfast show, the radio presenters Fitzy and Wippa informed a woman that her husband is a member of Ashley Madison on their live phone-in show! On being told, the upset Sydney woman said: "Are you serious? Are you freaking kidding me?" After she hung up, Wippa then said on air: "Oh I don’t know if we should have done that. That hasn’t left me with a good feeling. I’m sorry that that happened, Jo. I feel a bit bad." Not as bad as the the woman felt or her husband will feel when she gets back home! What’s your take on the Ashley Madison affair? It’s quite clear that Ashley Madison is on the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to computer security, a bit like this site! It seems being a member of a sex site offers no protection; it’s unprotected sex! It’s likely that a lot of the hacked email addresses are incorrect as Ashley Madison didn’t ask its members to verify their email addresses. And the site reportedly has lots of fake and scam profiles - sound familiar?! Hackers, not adulterers, should be exposed to judgement. I don’t want to walk into the moral jungle of adultery - it’s complicated, it’s very personal, and it’s none of my business. Adulterers are not criminals; hackers are. The hacker's actions have caused and will continue to cause immense grief for everyone involved, even for the partners that have been allegedly cheated on. I readily accept that in certain instances hacking can be justified if there is a public interest involved. But there is no public interest served in revealing the identities of Ashley Madison’s membership and now today its employees. The hackers are just self-righteous moralistic vigilantes serving their own private interests. Given how difficult it is for a man to get laid on this site, why would it be any different on Ashley Madison’s site? Perhaps the men are tighter and the women looser on Ashley Madison! Just as being a member of this sex site doesn't mean we're all having sex here, membership of an adultery site is far from proof of adultery. |

What’s your take on the Ashley Madison affair? You've said it very well, Spunky. I tend to sympathize with hackers who have the public good in mind, but this is simply opportunism in the guise of moral superiority. And, as far as websites being secure, it's been demonstrated that no web site is secure. Governments are hacking one another, businesses who can afford the best in security are nonetheless being hacked- it appears that abstinence is the only safe method. What’s your take on the Ashley Madison affair? Actually I have no interest. If a person was so stupid as to use personally identifiable information (work email, their regular credit cards, etc. ), it is their problem. The majority of hackers seem to be thrill seekers, why give them such an easy target against you?

To me it all has to do with greed!!! The hackers didn't do this to protect anybody, but just to see how much they could get to keep their mouth shut. Since the other party were aware of the scam, and decided not to give into, now it's all coming to the open, making it a serious mess, more like a life/death mess. WITHOUT PASSION LIFE IS NOTHING

I actually don't give a rats ass about it. Apart from the fact that the hackers should be hunted down and brought to trial it doesn't bother me what anyone does with their lives. However anyone who joins sites like these and uses their own, identifiable email and credit cards.....needs their head examined. ~~Anais Nin~~

Perfect article. Just a tiny thing, though ... the Japanese demotivator. The incoming man ... is he hubby or invitee ? He sees two pair of shoes. If a jealous husband, he'd be angry at once, don't you think ? If an expected guest, a third glass is ready to drink with him before fun starts. Ok, there are these decorative knives on the wall, but why should'nt it end very nicely, whoopee ?

What’s your take on the Ashley Madison affair? You have captured it spunky. When something happen on this site I am sure most were afraid of what would leak out. I am sure we have not heard the end to this leak on this site. For hackers I think they really should go to jail for what they have done. They are the true criminals. hugsssssssssss V Become a blog watcher sweet_vm

I never heard of the site until it hit the news!

You summed it up quite nicely. If anyone should be judged it's the hackers. Hope, they're found and punished. What amazes me is stupidity of people who use their work email addresses, real credit cards and/or any other information that could identify them. I'm so bad. I am finding lots of humor in this whole situation. People will be embarrassed, as they should be. Hypocrites are being exposed for who they are. (Duggar comes to mind, but he already suffered a major humiliation.) This will cause a lot of grief though. I wonder if any of those with a dot mil address will be court marshaled. Adultery is prohibited in the US Military. (Ah, but there is still no "proof" of any affairs.) I have had my accounts hacked. It's not a pleasant experience. There really are no "good guys" in this story. I don't agree with Ashley Madison's motto. Sure, relationships are complicated, but they are geared toward "cheating". Not a 'good' word. .... But I think the hackers are worse. (Even though I might find humor in what they did.) They are trying to "act" like some sort of moral enforcers, when it's really a bunch of butt hurt dudes who couldn't get laid on their site. Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

Nice editorial on the situation. You have read my take. You present another side. I had not addressed the hacker's. I agree completely. Shame on the Australian radio show for feeding the fire. But this is not the first time a station from Australia has shown poor form.

Being in the IT industry must be a massive advantage when it comes to computer/internet security. Thanks for stopping by.

You have made a very cogent and eloquent case for people using sex sites!

This comment shows that they are wise WAY beyond their years. I'm amazed how young they are!

I couldn't agree more. The hackers need to be found, charged, tried and imprisoned.
