PERFECT ME!
PERFECT ME! Marek Cecula’s Beauty of Imperfection porcelain set: Imperfections is this week’s theme for Half Nekkid Wednesday (HNW) - see August 5-Imperfections to see this week’s HNW contributions. It’s an odd theme, especially as there is a very strong sense on this site that imperfect bodies are the norm and that any shaming of bodily imperfections should be condemned. Perfection can only be subjectively defined and is culturally framed. In many ways, imperfection is the only perfection! What one person finds beautiful, another person may not. I don’t find tattoos beautiful but many people do. I find unshaven pubic hair beautiful but others are repulsed by the au naturel look. What one society sees as beautiful, another society sees as ugly. The women of the Burmese Kayan or the Long Neck Karen tribe traditionally wear neck rings as a mark of beauty. But to me, their neck rings look like signs of enslavement. Fatter women are often regarded as more beautiful in many parts of Africa, whereas thinner women are often promoted as more beautiful in the West by the body fascists - sorry, the fashion industry! In south-western Ethiopia, the Bodi tribe have a Ka’el festival which celebrates fatness. Men spend months before the festival fattening up on cow’s milk and blood. Bodi women find fat men irresistible! What was once considered beautiful in the past is often not regarded as beautiful now. In recent years, beards are increasingly being sported by young fashionably beautiful men, whereas beforehand beards were more of a minority pursuit. In eighteenth century England, men wore wigs to signal that they were in the 'pink of fashion'. Nowadays wigs aren’t seen as trendy except in English courtrooms. In her influential book The Beauty Myth, Naomi Wolf argued that images of beauty are used against women. The quest for beauty, as defined by society, is the path towards oppression. Our sense of beauty is largely shaped by cultural norms tweaked by our sense of self. Beauty is far more than in the eyes of the beholder! How would you describe your sense of beauty? What body imperfections do you have? Of the people depicted in the four photos below, what do you consider to be the most and least beautiful? By the standards of body fascists, I have the following body imperfections: three scars, two missing teeth, keratoconus in my corneas, allergies to cat’s saliva and house dust, a slight stomach paunch, greying hair (though I prefer the salt-and-pepper description), and a third nipple. But by my own standards, I have no imperfections. I’m the kind of man that gets up in the morning, walks to the bathroom mirror and quickly turns away as there’s nothing I can do to improve things! a Kayan tribeswoman: a size zero model (yes, that is the UK’s Prime Minister’s wife, Samantha Cameron, in the background): Bodi tribesmen: Conchita Wurst/Tom Neuwirth: |

I'm not sure if I have a sense of beauty....I just know what I like when I see it but I prefer to look beyond the surface for beauty. Too many imperfections to list I guess. Overweight....grey hair...well hidden by my daughter....a tooth missing from a hockey accident years ago and funny double jointed fingers!!! I don't really find any of the pictures attractive. ~~Anais Nin~~

My husband says I am beautiful. That is good enough for me. I find many people beautiful. Some conventional and others not so. I am not a fan of my saggy middle but accept it. I think I look pretty good for 47.

I'd be happier with a bit more meat on my bones. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis which can turn ugly.

1 - Ugliness has this supriority over beauty that it doesn't vanish with time. (Serge Gainsbourg) 2 - They increase but, as wine, I'm ageing well. 3 - Conchita Wurst is amazing, beautiful in voice and sense of humor. The bunch behind the scary bony thing (her too, of course) is frightening.

Like you, I think imperfections are cute, often cuter than perfections! Someone who thinks they're perfect is usually insufferable and intolerable!

Imperfect will always do me. Someone who thinks they're perfect is always hard work to me!

How would you describe your sense of beauty? Apparently, if we are to go by consensus- defective. What body imperfections do you have? Again, by consensus, it must be my beard. But I like it. Of the people depicted in the four photos below, what do you consider to be the most and least beautiful? None of them are doing it for me, Spunky. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

I can't say I really want to respond to your questions. Question number two, we haven't the room here to go into it. The most painful and the most difficult thing to come to grips with has been having Osgood-Slaughter's disease, resulting in knobby knees. It was especially disturbing to me as a teenager. I have always worn dresses below the knee or trousers instead of shorts because of it. Now I can't say I really care what others may think of me or my knees. I have recently been told I have pretty eyes and pretty smile and surprisingly (to me) -- pretty feet. It was very odd having a man give me a foot massage, but once I was more at ease with someone touching my feet, I rather enjoyed it.
