EAT DOG

Shot in Alaska, above is a photo of an eagle being attacked by a gulls trying to free its mate from the eagle’s talons. The gulls failed in their mission, and the eagle ate the gull soon after the photo was taken.

One of my favourite courses I studied at university was contemporary moral philosophy. The course made for great discussion, for example, about the rights and wrongs of war, suicide and assisted suicide, colonialism, inequality, and eating animals. Just because we can doesn’t mean we should.

I love watching documentaries about the animal world. But I find that my sympathies change depending on the programme’s focus. If the programme is about lions, I’ll want the lions to catch their prey. And, if the focus is about antelopes, I’ll want the antelopes to escape the lion predators.

At a party last night, I had a conversation about whether it’s right for a human to intervene and save the prey from its predator. The man I was talking to said, that if it was safe to intervene, he would save the prey from its predator. I said that I probably wouldn’t intervene and allow the predator to kill its prey.

I’d only intervene if domesticated animals were involved and I’d only intervene if safe to do so.

Of all the prey shown below, only the impala survived the clutches of their predator. I’m assuming the pigeon and sparrow share their 'prey' - that sparrow has great attitude!

alligator eats pelican:

pelican eats pigeon:

puffin eats sand eels:

lion doesn't eat impala:

dolphin eats salmon:

bear eats salmon:

seal eats penguin:

gull eats starling:

pigeon and sparrow fight it out!:

Nature is cruel, and swift. Animals kill and eat each other, But few kill for the joy of killing. Except man that is. We may out grow that, pardon me if i do not hold my breath.

My favourite subject in school was Maths.

No I wouldn't interfere unless it was a domestic pet....it's the natural law of things....if the predator doesn't eat he dies!

It's three way tie. History, and English and American lit.

If safe to intervene, would you save the prey from the predator in the wild?
I usually don't interfere with wild animals. PD had a problem watching our dog Rocky kill critters that came into the yard- it's hard to watch and listen to. I advised her to walk away. He was being a dog. He would restrain himself if I ordered him to, but he held a grudge about it. But sometimes he was quicker than me. I wish he were here to negotiate a settlement with that damned woodchuck who's raiding my garden. He was a very forceful and successful negotiator.

yes...it is a conundrum for researchers of "prey animals" to watch and not help them. What about a lion cub or cheetah cub who is lost and you know they will perish if they don't find their mother.....researchers watch this happen all the time. And the moral question is.....to help or not to help?

If safe to intervene, would you save the prey from the predator in the wild? Not in the wild, no. A predator hunts and eats to survive. Who am I to intervene!

What was your favourite subject at school, college or university? Math, Science, and Arts!
If safe to intervene, would you save the prey from the predator in the wild? I would have to remove myself from the situation, as I can't stand to see most animals getting hurt and/or killed. I said most because I couldn't care less about spiders and venomous snakes.

1 - Maths, it was wonderful to think in an absolute way. Later I was in front of calculating errors, approximations and so on.
Disgusted I turned toward something completly different (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), the mere opposite of science
as it never repeats and can't be really explained, history - specially history of women (true !!!)

2 - I'll always intervene to save a girl from a predator like a man being a nuisance to her in a wild swinger club.
If it's safe, that is, as you said, I mean from a guy not full of mucles and/or in anger. I'm so courteous !

That pic of yours with a fish going to kiss an orca is torrid, by the way.

What was your favourite subject at school, college or university? Geography and Social Studies

If safe to intervene, would you save the prey from the predator in the wild? Nature has been going on without interruption from me. Hawk has to eat, lion has to eat, alligator has to eat, snake has to eat. I don't need to interfere. Who am I to choose who should live or die?

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

I agree with you. Though both sad and beautiful at the same time, it's natural for animals to eat each other.

At school, my favourite subject was geography. For some reason I couldn't get into history. It was all about remembering dates and remembering the names of kings and queens. I much prefer social and political history now.

The moral dilemmas are perhaps what makes humans different to other animals. It'd be interesting to see whether other animals have ethical dilemmas.

I now find history fascinating. At school I couldn't get into it as the teacher just wanted us to remember the dates of battles and the names of kings and queens!

I never enjoyed literature and history at school.
With literature, the focus was always on the so-called classics like Shakespeare. I would have prefered more modern literature to whet my appetite.
With history, it was all about wars and battles and kings and queens. I would have prefered social and political huistory.
I liked chemistry though, especially making bad egg gas and playing with bunsen burners.

What was your favourite subject at school, college or university? History, especially ancient history, Ur, Sumer, Mesopotamia. That was probably one of the most interesting classes I took; I loved the professor. I could have listened to her for hours. The professor often makes or breaks the course, even it it is a favorite subject.

If safe to intervene, would you save the prey from the predator in the wild? That would be silly, probably the prey is already injured, intervening would result in a prolonged and painful death. Besides, if the prey hadn't been, slow, stupid, or impaired, it wouldn't be prey now would it?

I have come across quite a few predators here on this site. Hopefully I am quick, keen, and unimpaired and able to avoid most unfortunate situations, at least in the future.
I would have enjoyed ancient history. At school it was all about British history - battles, empire, and kings and queens. I still don't know whether King Alfred actually burnt the cakes!

Maths, science and arts are an eclectic mix of favourite school subjects. I liked geography, economics and technical drawing at school the most.

I enjoyed the certainties of maths even if it was very frustrating when I got it all wrong! I now like the fuzzy subjects like politics and history.
