THE AMERICAN DREAM







I want to wish all my American friends a very Happy Fourth of July.

The American Dream was coined by the American writer James Truslow Adams in his 1931 book, The Epic of America.

His American Dream was the "dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position."

Arguably the American Dream is rooted in the US Declaration of Independence, adopted on 4 July 1776, proclaiming that "all men are created equal" with the right to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness".

The meaning of the American Dream has changed over time; the idea has changed from the time European settlers arrived in the early seventeenth century to the time waves of immigrants arrived in the twentieth century. I’m not sure whether the American Dream means much now!

To me, it represented the chance to make a new life and spend lots of money! The American Dream, for me, is symbolised by the Statue of Liberty, JFK and Marilyn Monroe, anti-communism, Hollywood films, John Wayne, Ford cars, superhero comics, the Apollo mission, advertising, and unfortunately now Donald Trump!

Britain doesn’t dare dream nowadays; it’s still recovering from its loss of empire!

In 1962, Dean Acheson, the US Secretary of State, declared that "Great Britain has lost an Empire and has not yet found a role." Fifty years later, Britain still hasn’t yet found a role in world, European or even national affairs.

What does the American Dream mean to you?Although, certainly not perfect, it means protection of individual rights (sometimes way too much). Respect for individual "rights". And so many more things.

Does the American Dream still exist? It does exist, as evidenced by how many people want to move here and avail themselves of our culture

What’s your country’s dream? As above and hopefully to continue to evolve

The American Dream is different for each person in America. It's not one size fits all- a cookie cutter dream doesn't exist. I do think choices matter- freedom to choose. The right to live where you want and be with who you want. Choosing how to live your life and accepting others rights too!

What does the American Dream mean to you?
to be able to be better than you are both personally by freedom of expression and religion and professionaly by keeping buisness fair such as anti monopoly laws
Does the American Dream still exist?
it boken but not shatered. we need politions who work for their job by legislation not campaining if you do a good job youll get to keep your job
What’s your country’s dream?
yeah im at a loss for what you mean.. just keep thinking back to the 1st question, need more input

I think I liked thinking about Eugenie Bouchard covered in strawberries and cream better.

What does the American Dream mean to you?
It's just another phrase we repeat, like "land of the free and home of the brave". People came here for all kinds of reasons, often to escape debt. My own same surname ancestor was transported here as a felon. But most often the reason people emigrated was that things at home were very fucked up, and when they got here they found it was just as fucked up, if not more. Many went back. From the first, I think the foremost reason was indeed a hope to improve their lot, which for many turned quickly to greed and for many others to exploitation and misery.

Does the American Dream still exist?
Sure- it's only a dream. Why not?

What’s your country’s dream?
I'm kind of fond of the Canadian Dream- "There's beer left in the cooler, eh?"

I hear so many talking heads whine about white privilege and inequality. I call Bull! There is just as much opportunity for white as there is for any other race...It all depends on how hard you are willing to work for it. The dream is still available, it is all up to the individual to achieve it. The pursuit of happiness was offered, not the guarantee.

Oh! I ranted....Sorry about that.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Hopefully there will not be rain. It has been an absolutely perfect Fourth of July weekend so far! It's been slightly overcast, so it has kept the temperature down.
Your nephew should have attended a UK university; it would have been cheaper!
