WHO ARE YOU?

This is my offering to the Ninth Virtual Sumposium on Body Image/Imagery organised by humorlife. To check out other symposium participants, please go to Participants List For The Ninth Virtual Symposium Body ImageImagery.

In a recent survey of British women, nine out of ten women cannot identify their own body shape. Many women believe they have the hourglass figure of Marilyn Monroe even though the straight up and down figure of Gwyneth Paltrow is by far the most common body shape for women.

The researchers identified three basic shapes of women’s bodies - the hourglass, rectangle and triangle. The survey found that 63 per cent of women have a rectangular shape of Kim Cattrall or Nicole Kidman; 28 per cent have an hourglass shape of Scarlett Johansson or Jessica Alba; and 9 per cent have a triangular shape of Renee Zellweger or Rihanna.

Body image is how we perceive and how we feel others perceive our bodies. Having a positive body image means that a person has a realistic, accepting and even approving perception of their body.

Unfortunately, most people don’t have a positive body image of themselves. Having a negative body image is widely associated with anxiety, depression, behavioural problems, eating disorders and sexual problems.

Generally research has found that younger people have a more negative body image than older people even though older bodies are in decline. Women have a more negative image than men. Gay men have a more negative body image than straight men, but lesbian women have a more positive body image than straight women.

Research has also found that exposure to repeated and continuous images of the so-called perfect body shape in the media, whether magazines, newspapers, films, television, advertisements, Internet or social media, leads to people to have more negative views of their bodies.

The media is very powerful in shaping dominant cultural stereotypes of the perfect body. Deborah Schooler, an American psychologist, said: "People see the same images over and over and start to believe it’s a version of reality. If those bodies are real and that’s possible, but you can’t attain it, how can you not feel bad about your own body?"

However, three other American psychologists have questioned the dominant power of the media in determining people’s attitudes towards their bodies. Christopher Ferguson, Benjamin Winegard and Bo Winegard argued that peer effects are much more likely to cause body dissatisfaction than media effects.

Beauty has always been idealised throughout history but a person’s perception of their body often falls well short of society’s aesthetic ideals.

Everyone says that it’s important to have a positive body image and that someone’s body does not define who they are. The advice is to accept and love your body; I peddle that advice too. Having a positive body image is a very attractive feature in a person. But it’s far easier said than done.

There are a lot of people who make a lot of money out of people feeling bad about their bodies.

What is your body shape?
How positive is your body image?

I am a rectangle! I think I have a relatively positive body image, though I wouldn’t want to flaunt my naked body to total strangers!

Below are two Miu Miu adverts. The first Miu Miu advert shows Hailee Seinfeld then aged 14. This advert was banned because people may be encouraged to imitate the model by walking on a railway track. The second Miu Miu advert shows Mia Goth then aged 21. This advert was banned because the model looked much younger.

Also below is Tess Holliday, a size 26 model. She has never been asked by Miu Miu to walk along a railway track or pose seductively on a bed.

What is your body shape?
Triangle

How positive is your body image?
most days my body image and self esteem is pretty good, but once in a while my body image is negative= which causes me to low self esteem and some distress. "I too fat, I'm getting older, I am not big enough (penis size), and I have too many silver hair!"

I'm a rather large pear shape.

I have never had a particularly happy view as far as my own body image goes....my feelings are not as bad as they once were but I could do with more acceptance.

What is your body shape?
Somewhat deflated soccer ball. Think "Wilson" in "Castaway", buffeted by storms and overuse.

How positive is your body image?
That wasn't positive enough for you?

I guess it depends on which angle you're viewing me from. Front-on, I look like a nice full, hourglass. Sideways, I'm a soft, round bundle. My body image, ha. Pretty much, shit. Still working on that.

Red lipstick and "fuck me" shoes. What more could you want?

I'm a rectangle with a gut...and better looking legs (according to some)

I don't necessarily think I'm Adonis, but I'm no Jabba the Hut either

I guess I am a triangle shape and that my sense of body image is for the most part healthy. But I have my good days and my bad days.
But for the most part, I just love my body because it gives me so much pleasure these days.
Good post,

I have an hourglass figure with too much sand!
There are things I would like to change about my body. I would say I am 80% happy with it.

I am not very much into body shapes, but there are three geometric shapes I try to avoid:

Vicious circles ;
Love triangles and
Square people

good post.I can't say exactly. you added some shapes I have never seen before. Luckily for me, my body is pretty much well proportioned. Whether I am smaller or larger, not one part in particular dominates. I am not counting the girls either. They were always a decent size, lol....................thegrls

My body image sometimes takes a nosedive, usually after Xmas or on a beach!

How positive is your body image? It's much better and I am a work in progress. However, I have had a major setback recently. I have no motivation at all to exercise and I am in a lot of pain all over, it hurts even to raise a glass of water. I don't know the reason for this decompensation but I hope this is not an annual event, last August was the lowest I've ever been, largely due to chronic pain. One of the other bloggers said her body is durable, I responded, I wish mine was more durable. xo
I thought your body shape was doll-shaped!
